Ed Zitron@edzitron.com · 2d agoA fact not reflected in a single piece about this (it's in the press release from the companies) - this is a memorandum of understanding. The last big hundred-billion sized MOU that NVIDIA "signed" was to invest $100bn in OpenAI to build 10GW of data centers. It never happened!
For the first time I've started using GitHub's Block button. Low-quality drive-by contributions are a massive red flag on any engineer's resume.
James Snell@jasnell.me · 2d agoA word of advice to young developers: Stop spamming open source projects with AI "contributions". Opening dozens of PRs in a matter of hours is just going to piss people off and get you blocked regardless of whether the changes are legitimate or not.
Being an AI booster requires opting in the entire humanity into an existential bet. Not that Terminator kills us, lol, grow up. But that the hypothetical benefits for fighting climate change from AI outweighs the acceleration of climate change *from* building out AI. Fuck that. I don't consent.

The most annoying part of this timeline is that OpenAI and Anthropic will collapse, that will burst the AI bubble and collapse the US economy, and as always, the people being punished for it won't be the cultists from Silicon Valley, but everyday people. For once, let's send these CEOs to jail?
Google Workspace's ads for paying customers could not get any more annoying I DO NOT USE AI AT ALL and I get upsells to "expand my AI access" WTH. I want ZERO Gemini for my Workspaces suite, this is some bad joke. Even if you pay you get ads, just so maddening with Google

Sam and Dario must be sweating. The two other competitors who had other business lines next to LLMs are bowing out of the race. All that remains are two deeply unprofitable companies dependant on an infinite stream of venture capital. Someone please explain to me how this is sustainable.

This is the main reason I'm so angry about the "AI" bubble. All this enormous effort could have been spent combatting the climate crisis and the opportunity cost of your fucking chatbot is going to be the very climate we live in Imagine what we could have done with those 3 trillion dollars?
Not many people know that it's mandated by law that if you autocomplete some words using an LLM, you must immediately tell everyone on your socials. A friend forgot once and they're in jail. Stay safe out there

The AI industry is the new oil industry. Fuck them both for what they're doing to the environment and how they're wiping away all improvements since the Paris Climate Agreement and further accelerating climate change with their poisonous behind-the-meter gas turbines powering most new datacenters.

It's ironic that they call these "AI" things cutting-edge technologies when they're actually cutting-corners technologies.
The absolute shittiest restaurant website still makes me trust your business 1000% more than one with AI images. One makes me think maybe your design standards are low; the other makes me think *all* your standards are low. What other corners are you cutting? What other garbage are you happy with?
Will people actually put into their home an always-listening device made by a company so clearly incompetent at cybersecurity that they can't even control their own software? Do normal people actually trust Sam Altman to do the ethical thing? If so, I'd love to pitch them on a bridge I'm selling

This sounds more like an Alexa killer than an iPhone killer. I wonder how Amazon feels about this given their widely documented struggles with the Alexa+ rollout.
What a load of nonsense. Mediocre dudes are running (and ruining) the tech industry. I've never seen more incompetent dudes consistently fail upwards than in tech.

one of the sides of this debate has a propaganda budget in the billions and a feedback loop of hype confirmation running through the mycelia of every business network on the planet, the other is people whose lives have been impaired by an excess of discernment

This is one of the most brutal episodes I've recorded, and is the culmination of years of theories that have now effectively been proven true. Whether or not people want to talk about it, Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Oracle's growth is now dependent on these two companies growing forever.

"Sorry, my product randomly breaks the law sometimes" is not something we would tolerate from other industries. Maybe we shouldn't tolerate it with AI
I love that AI companies are all like "we just have a marketing problem" when regular people are having AI experiences like this all over the place every single day
