Don't have confirmation from all affected departments, but... #Philosophy at #Exeter has avoided compulsory redundancies, and so have the other disciplines I've heard from so far. They've wrecked our summer, and bullied beloved colleagues into "voluntary" redundancy. But we're still here.

Very exciting to learn what leading thinkers like Remy Debes, Nick Buccola, Maria Acosta Lopez, @joelkrueger.com, Robin Dembroff, @phronimouse.bsky.social, and Stephen Darwall have been up to, not to mention my co-authors @dryan149.bsky.social & @michaelbrownstein.bsky.social (@mitpress.bsky.social)
"Humanities are being extinguished by university bosses across the country. We desperately need an emergency rescue package to stop the death-rattle of Britain's great universities." @drjogrady.bsky.social in the Guardian 👇 www.theguardian.com/education/20...
Humanities among degrees being ‘extinguished’ by hard-up universities

"What drives these cuts is not financial necessity [...]. What drives these cuts is strategy and executive choice – the judgment of university leaders that HASS subjects can be (almost) as successful with 25% fewer staff."
'What is perhaps remarkable about the Exeter cuts is that they are targeted at some of the university’s most successful departments, many of which turn over a profit even after they have made enormous and increasing contributions to the central university budget.' Read, rage and weep.
This is cultural suicide and intellectual vandalism. In an era where humanities-illiterate tech bros have unearned god-like powers, we need historians, philosophers, ethicists, classicists more than ever. Please sign. (Reposting without 404) www.change.org/p/stop-redun...

The crisis in UK higher education is worsening week by week — Exeter University is one of the best in the UK, with superb lecturers (and several You’re Dead To Me guests), but it’s planning massive job cuts in History, Archaeology, Classics — see the petition below to lend your voice in support

I am heartbroken by University of Exeter’s decision to endanger the majority of staff in philosophy and qualitative social science, including #Egenis @exeterspspa.bsky.social No warning, no consultations, just an email dropped into inboxes announcing redundancy. c.org/zKbPJFDwBq #philsci #sts #hps
they’re pushing through approx 25% compulsory redundancy focused on humanities & social science without anything close to a financial justification. The only reasonable interpretation is ideological motivation. I am both heartbroken and embarrassed. Sign please. www.change.org/p/stop-redun...

There's a petition to fight the redundancies at Exeter. Anthropology is among the most targeted disciplines in the whole uni, with over half of us slated to lose our jobs. We do better than the university average on both student satisfaction and rankings which makes it feel ideologically targeted...

@uniexecec.bsky.social have announced that 200 people will be made compulsorily redundant, with over 500 in scope and most of those in Humanities and Social Sciences. The branch has asked for the key financials to support this case, but this has been denied. Complaint is in with CAC #vandalism #ucu

If you asked me, off the top of my head, to name a non-Oxbridge university in England synonymous with excellence in the Humanities - I would probably think of Exeter first. This feels like a very deliberate, targeted and ideological Bonfire of the Humanities
'About 150 academic roles are set to go at the south-west institution, which said it was targeting areas that are “no longer sustainable” or have seen changes in student demand.' History and English are name-checked. 1/3
Exeter Green Party stands in solidarity with the Exeter University and College Union in condemning the University of Exeter’s announcement of sweeping job cuts. These plans will recklessly imperil the University’s vital contributions to the social, cultural, and economic life of the city. 1/4
The Philosophy department at Exeter is exceptional. It has both a concentration of world leading researchers in the philosophy of the biological and cognitive sciences, and a unique departmental profile in the UK. It would be a catastrophic loss to the UK philosophy scene.
