It's not completely unprecedented for there to be a challenge to the citizenship qualifications of a member of Congress. Most have been rejected. In a couple of cases someone was unseated. All of them were decided by the House or Senate itself because that's what the Constitution explicitly says.

There will be a lot of equivocating about all the times search warrants have been executed on members of Congress for corruption investigations and the like, and it can't be stressed enough in how many ways HSI raiding Ilhan Omar is extremely not like that.

Paxton is a case of how you can be scandal-plagued but a flamboyant teflon sort of character, or you can be a boring competent workhorse with little stage presence, and either of those are electable, but the worst possible combination is to be hideously corrupt while also having negative charisma.

I see a lot of people sharing this because it's obviously a fun claim to gloat over, but it seems to be pretty clearly untrue.

Having the whole thing blow up in their faces like this is worth more to Talarico than bothering with a lawsuit would be. He'd have a genuinely hard time showing damages for one thing, but more generally, defamation litigation is a massive pain in the ass and very rarely worth your time and effort.

It's not the dumbest or second-dumbest or third-dumbest thing about this, but I do like including the Hollywood myth version of how a "silencer" works, just for the extra bit of "I have no idea what I'm talking about" flair.

It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

Republican US Rep Brian Fitzgerald tweets that he will introduce a bill to block purchases of Russian oil. Don Bacon (R-Neb) tweets that he will co-sponsor. Obviously this won’t happen during campaigning recess (and Trump could veto anyway) but interesting push-back on Trump.

We rightly worry most about the core electoral machinery and that's holding up pretty well, but any election under Trump is still something less than free and fair. Even if it's not enough to flip the outcome, state resources and power are unambiguously being abused to favor the incumbent party.
