Psychology prof at Durham + interdisciplinary stuff (usually psychosis, inner speech, a bit of neurodiversity). Author of "Presence: The Strange Science of the Unseen Other" (MUP). Chair of @theichr.bsky.social

A fascinating editorial decision from the BBC, to make the headline a scaremongering “AUTISM AND ADHD ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED”, and then, four bullet points later, have the author of the report quoted as essentially saying “nah, that’s bullshit, actually”.

ADHD and autism at risk of over-diagnosis, says report, as author warns of rise in mental ill health
Summary
• An official review in England finds there is a risk of people being over-diagnosed with
ADHD and autism - three key findings from the report
• As well as neurodevelopmental conditions, the review looks at mental ill health, particularly in younger people. Our health correspondent explains the difference
• It was commissioned earlier this year after Wes Streeting, then the health secretary, said there was an "over-diagnosis" of mental health conditions
• Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme earlier, review chair Prof Peter Fonagy said Streeting was "with respect, completely wrong"

Does spreading mental health awareness online amplify self-diagnosis? In my first PhD pre-print, I empirically examine this question (n =3392) with some kick-ass collaborators and tools from cultural evolution A 🧵

Yesterday, we were at the @BBC Contains Strong Language Festival, hosted by the incredible National Poetry Centre Accompanied by poet Karen McCarthy Woolf and her words, a few sealed envelopes, and our research questions, we asked the room: what happens in our minds when we read poetry?

www.neuroschoolsscotland.com To try and support parents in finding schools that are as “good as possible” for neurodivergent kids - including those awaiting assessment - she has started a website where people can share their own experiences of schools in Scotland. Sharing in case useful to anyone.

Opened up Instagram and seen a dear childhood friend post a video about her autistic son (who is only five) having a horrible time in school and getting no support. My heart hurts. There’s so many things to be sad and angry about in the world.

AI psychosis hits the AI field? Folks are talking about an increase in submissions to journals like TMLR and 60K submissions to ICML, especially new single author papers. Any professor will tell you they receive emails from random people describing the "discovery" they've made.
