If—*IF*—someone was deeply racist, but had a genuine conversion and became—hypothetically—more enlightened, do we call that a ‘reverse Goodwin’ now...?

No time to write anything, so please enjoy this tale of an artist who died 24 years ago today and was obsessed with death to the extent of doing hundreds of works on the subject, faking his own, and embalming a homeless man he’d befriended, who didn’t want “the authorities” to have his body
Robert Lenkiewicz: Larger than life and death
He had thousands of lovers, faked his own demise, and kept an embalmed corpse in his home. Yes, Robert Lenkiewicz was one of the great eccentrics – and now, prices for his paintings are soaring

Happy 12th anniversary of the day Kim Jong Un visited the lube factory.
That 70s time capsule house that did the rounds yesterday reminded me of the house we moved into nine years ago (see the reply for some pictures of the wallpaper. If you’re well-behaved today, I might dig out the original estate agent photos as a treat)
Facebook Memories tells me it’s six years since I took photos of the carpets in the house we’d moved into the day before
Thank you, the newsletter from @thefence.bsky.social, for this splendid thing

It’s the 75th anniversary of two English women on holiday in France waking in the small hours to the sounds of a fierce battle taking place, later discovering that they were ‘witnessing’ the disastrous raid on Dieppe, which had taken place almost exactly nine years earlier 🧵

Well, I rather liked Devil Wears Prada 2. Join me for another incisive review next time I watch a film
It’s the 566th anniversary of King James II of Scotland being hoist with his own petard—almost literally, given that he was taken out by a piece of his own artillery while besieging a castle 🧵
Sadly, there won’t be any more. Always sad when someone dies who spent their lives promoting laughter, goodwill and harmless fun.
Jimmy Cricket has died. I can't remember any of his jokes but as a child I knew he was funny. *Paddington holding hands with Jimmy leading him towards heaven, the clouds part and a voice in the distance is saying, "hey Jimmy, and there's more"’

A correction to this: it wasn’t Catholics but mainstream Anglicans who were being mean to Protestants
It’s the 366th anniversary of the ‘Strange and True Newes from Gloucester’ which said that God was displeased with Catholics being beastly to Protestants and had sent a plague of frogs and toads to intercede on behalf of the Puritans—and it worked! Well... 🧵
Just been reminded of Starfish Hitler. You’re very welcome
til that herb butter was named after its inventor, Sir Herbert Butter-Knife in 1851. That it coincidentally contains both herbs and butter is just one of those wonderful happy accidents.

It’s not my considered opinion, let’s say, that the three months I was unable to work last year are disputed. The Covid lingering in my gut that’s causing unpredictable food intolerances, and the heart palpitations on simply standing up - in someone who was fit and active - seemed pretty real to me
Long covid is a disputed subject, at best.
