new from @sp-ainsworth.bsky.social & me, a back of the ✉️ estimate in @ggwash.org: 🚌&🚲lane projects save 1-2 human lives per year, & create societal savings of $88-$111M/year, just in avoided crashes. We don't capture every project or ancillary health benefits, so this could be an underestimate.

Chart showing DDOT’s bike lanes have had gigantic safety benefits, reducing total crashes by 40% and injurious crashes by 60% on the corridors where they are installed. These 24 bike lanes have saved an estimated 1-2 human lives per year.

NEW: We defeated a lawsuit seeking to block new housing on upper Connecticut Avenue NW. The lawsuit challenged zoning changes that will allow multifamily housing in the DC neighborhood with the fewest affordable units. We’re fighting for more homes to drive down housing costs for everyone in DC.

seems like voters in R-1-A and R-1-B zones voted disproportionately for Kenyan McDuffie. (not a perfect correlation obvi, and they're still counting votes)

Here's the precinct map of D.C., and you can see that @janeese4dc.bsky.social has so far cleaned up in almost all central parts of D.C., which includes Ward 1 and Ward 6, much of wards 4 and 5, and most of east of the river. This is an impressive showing by any measure.

1. London Underground station flooding has reportedly been reduced by around 90% thanks to a group of engineers: beavers. After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

This was also an odd window into the Caribbean cruise economy. The walkable mini town is surrounded by a fence and most of the biz are closed when a cruise ship isn't docked (tho we grabbed coffee at a nice cafe that was open all day for locals). When docked the ships belch exhaust over the town

was on vacation in the British Virgin Islands and walked to the cruise ship port in Road Town, Tortola. The cruise passengers are dropped right off into a miniature town in which cars are banned. Odd reminder that many Americans love walkable neighborhoods but think of them as a vacation thing

How, in 2016, we got less of Lanier Heights

While the District’s population went up by 15% between 2010 and 2020, Lanier Heights’ population increased only 3%. A downzoning is a big part of the reason the neighborhood hasn’t grown.
