In case you had any doubt about what the "invasion" language is about.
There are parts of DC less than 200 feet from a metro where anything denser than a single family home is literally illegal. And the Zoning Handbook is really clear about why.

DC should really leverage the comp plan/zoning reform to take advantage of the funding in this bill

The happy hour celebration of the 21st Century ROAD to #Housing Act becoming law (yes, us housing nerds do that sort of thing here in DC, a delightfully wonky town), organized by Inclusive Abundance, @upforgrowthaction.bsky.social, @yimbyaction.bsky.social, & other orgs was a wonderful time 🎉🎉
It can be hard to get folks with young kids to, say, run for ANC, but they're often willing to send a letter to electeds or even testify virtually. They should sign up to our mailing list to hear about opportunities. Dcyimbys.org

Agreed! Young homeowners in my leafy DC suburbs have quasi-PTSD from their own house searching, and a lot of positive generational solidarity. Only challenge is activating them politically in proportion to their numbers, as they are (understandably) very busy.
@brianneknadeau.bsky.social drops a bill to set DC up for LVT. 1) Requires land component of a prop tax assessment reflect underlying value of the land as if it were vacant, and 2) Publishes assessment-sales ratio studies with an explicit land component. lims.dccouncil.gov/Legislation/...

This used to be true but I think increasingly, young homeowners are also very YIMBY
There’s a an age/ race element to this story but if you actually dig in it’s mostly about “who rents vs who owns a home?” In cities. Turns out those people vote for different kinds of elected officials.
One amusing but infuriating aside - the commissioner that voted against said they could approve 4 units and if more was needed OP could come back and they'd approve it quickly. But OP has been working on this for over 4 years! It took ZC more than a year to approve it!
Let's talk about how a few ANCs just pushed the Zoning Commission and the Office of Planning to change the rules and allow a lot more homes by-right in DC . If you want to help make changes like this, you should run for ANC (and reach out for help). A detailed🧵

One of the ways you can tell these subdistricts are a bad idea is to look at existing vibrant neighborhoods. Georgetown, Dupont, U St, etc weren't built this way. A neighborhood should be shaped by the people and businesses that show up to live, work, and play there.
The fundamental issue is the city is trying to shape specific uses of buildings along the corridor, splitting it into housing, retail, and arts sub-districts. All these things should be allowed throughout - the city shouldn't be directing this.
Thoughtful look at the H st land use study recommendations
DC's Office of Planning has a survey on the future of H St. Their recommendations generally move us in the right direction, but they're also a microcosm of the issue with our current planning regime. A detailed 🧵 publicinput.com/hstreetstudy...

A couple weeks ago, the Zoning Commission passed the first vote to upzone Cleveland and Woodley Park! This is a big win, but it took too long to get here. The initial proposal was submitted in 2017 by CP/WP residents. It was passed in the 2021 amendments to the Comp Plan...
New year, new ANC Commissioners! We also have plenty of elected leaders returning to serve their neighborhoods. Wondering which ANC or SMD is yours? Or maybe what an ANC or SMD is? 🧵 👇

I’m thrilled to receive the support of @dcyimbys.bsky.social #1 rank in their Ward 1 endorsement! I strongly believe housing is a human right, though we can’t guarantee access to housing that does not exist.

A couple brief thoughts on these responses. 1) Many candidates - including all four mayoral candidates - indicated support for our entire Comp Plan Agenda. Full implementation of our agenda would allow us to build the homes we need to drive down costs in the District.

This is a good article, but disturbing to see this from the OP Director. *Not* increasing housing capacity puts pressure on renters. In the game of housing musical chairs, the wealthy will always have a place to live. The question is whether there are homes for those with less.
NEW: D.C.'s Future Land Use Map will determine what gets built where for the next 25 years. The city is asking for the public’s input on a new version — and the process is rekindling long-running debates over how land is used, @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports.
