The Committee agreed that these funds should improve human rights and democracy in Egypt, and we have to see concrete steps before the funds can be disbursed.

The @eudiplomacy.bsky.social assessment of human rights progress in #Egypt was always going to be flawed, as there are no criteria on which progress can be measured. The @ec.europa.eu decision is therefore purely political. The commission wanted to release the €1bn & it did so.
The decision by #Poland refusing to implement an #ICC arrest warrant is unlawful & undermines #EU commitment to international law. Justifying impunity for crimes against humanity by citing Auschwitz is an insult to the memory of the Holocaust victims.

The #EU stands to benefit immensely from a positive transition in #Syria, however this requires prudence, strategic thinking and prioritizing stabilizing Syria over narrow electoral interests (AKA pandering to depurations now crowd).
