Anyone who has been to Syria could easily see the magnitude of poverty & suffering people are forced into. Lifting sanctions is a key element to addressing this situation. Europe should engage with the US to reduce some of the excessive US conditions. en.majalla.com/node/325267/...

Washington tells Damascus what it needs to do to ease sanctions

Demands include a public ban on any Palestinian political activity, proscribing Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organisation, and allowing unilateral US military action in Syria

In a shocking development, Tunisia sentenced opponents, lawyers, media workers & activists to long prison sentences in a deeply unfair trial. Just days ago the European Commission proposed declaring Tunisia a safe country. Some of those convicted live in the EU. www.amnesty.org/en/latest/ne...

Tunisia: Mass convictions of opposition activists after sham trial marks a dangerous moment

A Tunisian court has sentenced forty individuals to harsh prison terms after they were convicted on trumped-up charges.

New article with @timep.bsky.social on EU's Syria policy. The EU’s approach is cautiously optimistic. While the transition holds great potential, it’s a challenging road ahead—one the EU can navigate by learning from its experience in Libya. timep.org/2025/04/02/e...

EU Reset in Syria: A Second Chance for Stability in the Middle East

The EU must adopt a clear, long-term strategy for Syria to ensure stability and counter disruptive actors.

Also, won't really stop the rise of parties on the right. The 2017 Italy-Libya deal is a clear example of how short sighted migration policies end up propping political rivals on the more right of the spectrum.

Today, @ec.europa.eu will announce new return proposals – paving the way for ‘return hubs’ or deportation centres outside the EU & widescale detention in Europe. Unworkable, expensive and inhumane – here's why these proposals won’t work & what the EU should do instead🧵

Ahead of the Brussels conference on 17 March, I told @thenationalnews.com that any political process for Syria must ensure that transitional justice and accountability are key components. This is absolutely key in order to avoid the horrible events that unfolded in the past days.

Mediterranean strategic partnerships in action: At the Ukraine UNGA vote, only 3 Arab countries voted along with the EU resolution against the US & Russia. What connects Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia? All three are recipients of €100s of millions from the EU.

According to this statement the EU believes that: 1-Denial of humanitarian aid & use of starvation are acceptable forms of warfare. 2-Actions are evaluated on the basis of who did them not any standard. 3-No matter what happens, there is always a way to justify Israel genocide.

Shameful decision that undermines international law & Germany’s global influence. Without respect for international law, Germany has very little to offer the rest of the world, compared to USA, China or Russia.

Today is a grim milestone in EU history. EU leaders are welcoming the foreign minister of Israel, whose leader is wanted for crimes agains humanity. Israel is accused of committing genocide, apartheid & ethnic cleansing. It occupies two of its neighbors & regularly bombs them, unprovoked!

Today marks a grim milestone. For three years, Russia has brutally attacked Ukraine, trying to steal land that isn’t theirs. Right now, more than ever, we have to support Ukraine. Extract from my doorstep ahead of today’s Foreign Affairs Council ↓

Military-economic enterprises growing influence in Egypt. "EFSDA" a military linked body has expanded its economic footprint after monopolizing wheat imports into fishing. EFSDA arrested 5 fisherman & had them tried in front of a military court for 'fishing illegally."

The Egyptian government is now organizing protests in Rafah and mobilizing their media against the American proposal to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from Gaza to Sinai. The move comes following the public spat between the American & Egyptian presidents.

Positive news, the European parliament proves that its role in safeguarding EU regulations & interests is vital. Without structural reforms, Egypt's stability will remain precarious. Important for the parliament as a whole to adopt the recommendations in this report. timep.org/2024/09/05/e...

Glad to see the adoption of my report in the Foreign Affairs Committee on the proposal to grant €5 billion to #Egypt. The Committee agreed that these funds should improve human rights and democracy in Egypt, and we have to see concrete steps before the funds can be disbursed.

Just back from an unbelievable trip to #Syria. I will be sharing insights from the trip, lessons from Syrian civil society & what is needed to help Syria transition into a better future. Back in Brussels I am flooded by a sense of "cautious optimism" & a lesson that nothing is forever.

Ignorant & Islamophobic statement by @euractiv.com new editor-in-chief matthew karnitschnig Although "Baklava" is not even remotely a staple of daily life in Muslim migrant communities, so maybe he meant that 'hatred of Jews' is not that common in these communities?

Shocking to see #Poland, a strong advocate for international law, blatantly flouting it by granting immunity to an #ICC suspect. States will always have reasons to exempt suspects from arrest, however respect for rule of law means one standard that applies for everyone. Be that Putin or Netanyahu.

Bild

The decision by #Poland refusing to implement an #ICC arrest warrant is unlawful & undermines #EU commitment to international law. Justifying impunity for crimes against humanity by citing Auschwitz is an insult to the memory of the Holocaust victims.

POLITICO Europe@politico.eu · 2y ago

Polish PM Donald Tusk has guaranteed safe passage for Benjamin Netanyahu to travel to an Auschwitz liberation memorial event, despite the ICC arrest warrant issued against the Israeli leader.

The #EU stands to benefit immensely from a positive transition in #Syria, however this requires prudence, strategic thinking and prioritizing stabilizing Syria over narrow electoral interests (AKA pandering to depurations now crowd).

Several European countries have decided to suspend processing of Syrian asylum applications, leaving asylum seekers in limbo. In an earlier piece, TIMEP's @maitelsadany.bsky.social & Obai Kurd Ali explain how these decisions are premature & likely violate international law. timep.org/2024/12/18/l...
