I resent AI for the time it now costs me having to check virtually everything I see online to know if it’s real or not. I’m fairly savvy about this stuff and have been fooled plenty of times. This is what destroys us, not Skynet but the slow death of objective reality. It’s only going to get worse.

For example, this is from the 1979 Tory manifesto. Promising not to adversely affect the right of those already legally settled here is quite a contrast to the Tory policy of evicting foreign nationals from social housing regardless AFAIS of how long they’ve been here.

Excellent piece by @samfr.bsky.social. If you're using the term "Boriswave", you're doing the work of the alt-right. The Starmer-McSweeney leadership took this up as an attack line. But as they so often discovered, if you adopt your opponents' diagnosis, it becomes hard to avoid their solutions.

I've been combing through Reform UK's latest party accounts. Reform UK took more in donations in 2025 than Labour and the Lib Dems combined...twice over. £31.9 million in donations in a non-GE year. It's staggering. They spent a lot (over £21m) but banked over £10m. Reform's war chest = £11.9m

Great analysis. Let me add pattern-recognition. I wrote this for the Guardian in 2013. The current Tory/Reform/Restore 'falling out' that RW media is meticulously performing serves in part to move Farage to the acceptable side of a cordon sanitaire in case a Tory/Reform pact or coalition is needed.

There is a pattern of behaviour here. Robinson is doing what leaders of far-right movements have always done and continue to do. Like shady businessmen, they set up one firm that serves their goals, then declare it insolvent and set up another one with a different name – each time creaming the profit of press coverage and a small shift of the political landscape. This is precisely how the constant formation-denouncement-repackaging cycle of far-right movements works. By making a very public announcement of his disassociation from the EDL, Robinson gets up from a space he himself has created along the crowded bench which is our political spectrum and sits somewhere else. He repositions himself, notably, in relation to his previous position. His views do not appear to have changed one iota. Yet, magically, he now appears more moderate in comparison with his former image: an image that he created, then labelled extreme. In the process he makes everyone else on the political bench scooch up or scooch down. This is exactly the modus operandi of such factions. From the British Union of Fascists to the British People's party, the Action party, the National Front, the Flag Group, the New National Front, the BNP and the EDL, the far-right throbs and expands, blooms, then folds into itself and subdivides like an amorphous but sentient blob from a 1950s B movie. It reinvents itself constantly until it finds the marketable packaging, charismatic personnel, economic conditions and public mood within which it can thrive. In the process it creates new and unusual vacant spaces in our political consciousness that existing or newly formed parties scramble to fill. The entire manoeuvre is designed to inexorably drag the Overton window to the right, making the intolerable, accepted and the intolerant, acceptable.
