Currently, there are more than 200 such awards honoring dissertations, papers, articles, books, and career achievement. Winners are generally selected by member committees appointed by the chair or executive committee of the section. Here are my thoughts: 1. LLMs are fundamentally unreliable and their behavior can be unpredictable. 2. We have given them internet access, tools and the ability to write software. 3. Their mistakes and hallucinations can now become actions. We can’t fully control them and they can do real damage.

Twenty-five years ago this morning, I happened to be on a panel in lower Manhattan. We heard something like an explosion, but New York was full of strange sounds. The panel continued until someone came in and told us a plane had hit the World Trade Center, the event was over.
