Running a GCP job for which I clearly did not provision enough RAM and somehow filled with the same manager guilt of when you realize someone on your team is too stretched I’m sorry, computer. I did not enable you with the necessary tools to succeed here

I'm speaking at the NYC Statistical Computing Meetup about @grantwitness.org: how we use modern #rstats stack to produce trustworthy, reproducible, rapid data that powers activism, litigation, and journalism. Join us in-person @ NYU or online. Mon, Oct 19 at 7PM! www.meetup.com/nyhackr/even... 🧪

In an icebreaker a few weeks ago, our team was sharing pet peeves and an early-20s said API 429 errors. Not API errors but specifically status code 429 (too many requests) and I'm still thinking about it If that somehow isn't a metaphor for early 20s exuberance.. your 30s are all 500s

Sometimes during the day I make a note on my PostIt note to-do list that is just to remind me to add something to my running Google Doc to-do list. This is either very organized or very chaotic and I’m not even sure which anymore

The eternal question in data is "what is the denominator" and man does Gemini make silly choices. Asked how common an injury is, one might assume I meant *in people* but am given two rates: - % of injury among all hamstring injuries - % of injury among those who have half of the injury 🤷‍♀️

Apparently I talk about knowing “what good looks like” too much because I started to say this today and my team finished my sentence 😳 That said, so glad to have “grown up” when #rstats was all about talking about tacit knowledge and workflows and the joy of setting things up nicely

Sidenote: this all illustrates an recurrent fascination of mine -- how often the blocked to good work is never having gotten to see "what good looks like" like if you've never seen a of datamart or an orchestrator, this feels reasonable. And DE has far fewer public examples than DS 12/

Had so much fun chatting with @lucystats.bsky.social and @sarahlotspeich.bsky.social about gnarly real world data wrangling — from elections to EHRs and beyond! Show link below! Meanwhile, I’m live-posting of my latest civic data eng sidequests here bsky.app/profile/emil...

🎙️ Today on Regression to the Mean Girls @sarahlotspeich.bsky.social & I chat with the amazing @emilyriederer.bsky.social about a deep dive into election data! We chat data quality! Headless browser automation! Connections to EHR data! It’s great.

Yes, I would judge you for bringing iced coffee to an interview. But only because diluting previously hot brewed coffee with ice cubes is definitionally weak. Bring cold brew to show me you understand good things take time and are worth upfront investment. That’s a builder mindset

CFP for @causalscience.org closes on Wed! Selfish reminder to submit so I can watch your talk 🍿 Also remember to register; always closes before conf! IMHO everything you need to know about any flavor of DS can be learned from causal thinking (One day I will finish my drafted post on this... 🤦‍♀️) 1/

There's something really beautiful about canonical mathematical models or analytical frameworks (L-V in diffeq, epi study designs, etc.) Just a testament the extent to which all our x-discipline problems are the same at some level of abstraction and the power of taxonomizing / naming them

A wonderful review by Stefano on 100 years of Lotka–Volterra models. Don’t miss the incredibly detailed Supplement, truly the “War and Peace” of LV models. I really wish it had existed when I was a grad student! doi.org/10.1146/annu...

Never going to look at NYT election data the same was again after hearing @christinezhang.bsky.social ‘s awesome @posit.co ::conf keynote! She discussed all the diff viz they considered to capture the plethora of sources of uncertainty in polling data (Also the needle and election night plots!)

Trouble for Democrats in Maine? Susan Collins is leading Troy Jackson by 3 points in a new NYT/Siena poll. By contrast, the poll shows Democratic nominees leading by 5 points each in Michigan and New Hampshire. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/24/u...

Incredibly sad and sorry to have missed everyone at posit::conf with a mind bending migraine which apparently was the harbinger of whatever bug has me down and out atm🤒. Grateful to the undeserved kindness of organizers and immense creativity of the lightning speakers who filled the gap 1/

It is surprisingly difficult* to find someone to whom the phrase "data generating process" is first attributed. Stats lazy web? *as in, I Googled it and was not in top hits. I have tried (almost) nothing and it isn't working!
