It's 30 days until the publication date of The Pope's Hitman, and I'm counting down with a seasonally and story-appropriate Advent Calendar! For Day 1, meet Saint Longinus, the Roman centurion who tradition holds pierced the side of Christ on the Cross then later became Christian.

An advent calendar. On the left of the calendar grid is an image of the cover of The Pope's Hitman by J.M. Berger, featuring a gray-toned image of the spiral Bramante Staircase in the Vatican Museums, Vatican City. A blurb reads "John Wick meets Conclave as a priest with a deadly secret will stop at nothing to protect the Pope against an explosive Christmas Eve plot with the fate of the Catholic Church at stake!" On the right is an image of Saint Peter's Basilica at night with two review excerpts:

“Berger (Optimal), a senior research fellow at the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism, puts his background to good use in this riveting action thriller.”
-- Publisher’s Weekly

“This is ridiculously over-the-top and I loved every second of it ... great characters ... fun premise ... crazy situations.”
-- The Optionist

Bachman-Turner Overdrive releases “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” 52 years ago today — a song originally used as a “work track” to set the amplifiers and mics. “We thought, just for fun .. I’d stutter” the ‘b-b-b-baby’ line, Randy Bachman said. It stuck. 🎸

I once went to my son’s middle school to pick him up for a doctor's visit. At the desk, I asked for Will Ross in Ms. Smith's class. The woman picked up the intercom and asked for Will Smith to be sent to the office. 🤣

Happy Labor Day! Today we're thinking about the work of writers, editors, & publishers who create compelling stories and the librarians, teachers, & booksellers who connect those stories to readers. It's work that should be celebrated not banned.

Before losing her life in 1986 aboard Space Shuttle Challenger, Christa McAuliffe was set to be the first teacher in space with plans to teach a lesson to kids around the world from orbit. Today is her birthday, and even now, her courage and dedication to education continues to inspire.
