To find a nugget of meaning, the user must sift through mounds of slop—and some simply won’t bother. They’ll serve the slop unfiltered to another party, who performs this interpretive labor themselves, only to discover that the underlying meaning does not exist. When someone expects me to perform their share of this interpretive labor, I get angry. Grice’s rules are, in essence, rules of etiquette—their unwarranted violation is rude.

I've been unsettled lately when reading messages and papers. It feels like I'm dissociating. Everything seems a bit alien, even if it's completely human. I've had a realization: When our simulations finally exited the Uncanny Valley, they brought the Uncanny with them.

Oof I felt this one. I was not familiar with Paul Grice's cooperative principle, "the speaker is conveying some intent as well as they can". i.e. we used to count on there being some intent behind fluent language. What if we no longer can? Another level of norms collapse beyond social media?

A bike planner died on his community’s streets, and I wish that this was a unifying moment for the transpo practitioner community to come together to demand networks of all-ages facilities for people on bikes. Not ITS or robocars or bulbouts. All-ages bike facilities. RIP Riley O’Neil.
