This, 1000x over. Writing in a second language is hard, we get it. Even in your first, I still have to google how many "p" are in "attraper" sometimes (one, it's one). But a PhD is about finding your own original voice as a researcher, so LLM-written emails make us doubt you'll ever do that.

Mike Dickison@adzebill.bsky.social · 2w agoOver the last 18 months @thneed.bsky.social and I have been experimenting with being Wikipedians (or Wikimedians) in Residence at conferences—photographing academics, checking they and their papers are in Wikidata, and improving Wikipedia articles related to their research.
So we wrote up everything we learned, and it's an actual (small) book now. Tamsin is in Paris at Wikimania with a boxful, handing them out, but you can download the whole thing for free. This was all funded by a small grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Wi...

Im so exhausted by this pattern. Historians spend years in the archives to write detailed accounts of the past. Only for journalists, doctors, podcasters, and now cartoonists, to swoop in and get paid a lot of money to trot out the same work, "uncovering hidden histories" that are not at all hidden.

Published my first academic article as a grad student in a very reputable French semiolinguistics journal which suffered from a similar problem. Thankfully, my work also straddles gender studies so English-speaking colleagues thought I was just very edgy.
David Shiffman, Ph.D. 🦈@whysharksmatter.bsky.social · 2mo agoTo my friends in soil science, If your goal remains sharing your peer-reviewed research papers on social media and disucssing them with the public, I might suggest considering changing the name of this journal. (Yes, I know what the term means in the context of soil.)
The interesting question is not who uses Zotero or does not use Zotero. The interesting question is which academics enjoy working conditions that allow them to make scholarship central to their professional lives, and which academics have to do scholarship <in spite> of their working conditions.

Like many in the academic community, I'm absolutely shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Dr. Raúl Pacheco-Vega. I used to read his blog religiously a decade ago as a young PhD student learning to navigate academia with very little prior training, and learned so much from him. With gratitude.
