It's that time of year when I teach our new masters students how to find stuff on their topics on the internet and in various databases. They display the traditional mix of anxiety and passion!

This is a great rant and indicates the degree of alarm felt by journal editors who do not have the resources at present to deal with industrial scale fraud: www.markkoyama.com/p/the-new-ag...

Very true. And something those of us with power to change small things should be trying to improve.
It concerns me that the HE sector continues to over reward individual accolades such as grant getting (partly a matter of luck) and under reward vital things such as sustained collegiality and commitment to supporting students. It’s not healthy.
That moment when the endless meetings and desperate rush to get everything ready for the beginning of the semester gives way to the first class of actual students who ask good questions and remind me why I love doing what I do!

The joys of raising a bilingual child, chapter 125. Said child now produces beautiful sentences in freewith subjunctives in them. I have clear memories of rather painful secondary school French lessons and having to learn how and when to use the subjective. Brains are amazing...
also, if you need someone to go to any French archives for you and get overly excited about the documents they scan for you, in a precise, orderly and professional fashion, hit me up! La Corneuve - SHD - BNF - AN - Archives de Paris - or wherever you like if you pay my travel!
found something SUPER COOL in my research today, plodding through 1000 pages of hand-written cadastral registry has paid off 🥳 this is actually work for a client, not for me, but I still get massively overexcited about archival finds

I bought out Rosslare-Dublin train tickets online. Little did I know what delights would continue to reach my inbox after I went back to work...
I am trying to put together a lecture for beginner masters students on this and it is infuriating. I taught their predecessors over the years all the useful tips and tricks. Now I have to stop myself from having a 1-hour-rant about how everything is worse now.
Sorry chatbot lovers but the waning of Boolean operators in most search functions on websites has made my life actively worse. You can't find anything, you can only have things suggested to you.

Regularly scheduled caveat that being kind is NOT about being "nice". Where nice will lie and "just wants to get along," kindness is about accountability, responsibility, and honesty. It will necessitate hard conversations and good boundaries. It is often about doing what's hard, not what's easy.

This is a very cool project tracing biographies across the Colonial and India Offices: jimclifford.ca/col_matching/ I'm teaching neither the British Empire not quantitative history next year, but I definitely want to use it with students.
