the experience of COVID really drove this home for me. It wans't the apocalypse, life went on, but a million people died and there were enormous social costs, some of which continue to this day and then when it was done most people were like "let's never think about that again"

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

Somewhere out there is a kind man who drives a red car with a child seat in the back, who was randomly hailed on the street yesterday & ended up taking the groom’s parents to a wedding (taxi failed to arrive). It was my daughter’s wedding. Whoever you are, the finest of Exeter, we are so grateful!

We’re not just worried about jobs (ours & colleagues’); we’re deeply concerned about future plans to hollow out humanities teaching. Bigger classes; less specialism. ➡️ Charging £9k fees for shrinkflation degrees? New FBAs at risk in Exeter jobs cull www.timeshighereducation.com/news/new-bri...

Yesterday, in her all-staff talk our VC chose to highlight the recent election of 5 FBAs from the University of Exeter. She failed to point out that 4 of us (with many of our colleagues) have just been placed at risk of redundancy. #DefendExeterUni @exeterucu.bsky.social

In breezy Brighton, speaking about political theology at the British International Studies Association @mybisa.bsky.social.

All the philosophy students who pursued their passion made a wise decision. Learning how to think is a always a good investment. Psychology grads are not doing too badly on the job market either.

The pope is weak on crime, tbh. I haven’t heard of him arresting a single person.

The Yale report on trust in higher education has some good recommendations for reforms in many areas that I hope Yale and other schools implement. But its diagnosis is oddly silent about what I suspect is the most important force driving the decline in trust in higher education: political attack.

I’m so excited to be covered by a union contract for the first time in my life. I’m tenured so my raise is mostly wiped out by dues. But we got the bottom quarter of our unit a 14% raise. Protections for academic freedom and shared governance. Promotion paths and multi-year contracts for lecturers

habemus contractum!

what bugs me most about the $2/word model is it makes all words equal when clearly there are $3 words and $1 words and some that should be thrown in for free
