New substack about our new paper looking at how the impact of a paper shapes its retraction! @jevinwest.bsky.social @shahanmemon.bsky.social
Are famous scientific findings easier to retract?
It may paradoxically be easier to claw back well-known findings, since they’re the ones people like to talk about.

People really need to go back to the original Jurassic Park and look at the rather disturbing ways in which InGen's management of it now looks prescient
guys please stop falling for this, this is not “rogue AI” it’s “environments with lax cybersecurity controls”

More than 50,000 submissions to @iclr-conf.bsky.social this year? That's more than all the previous iterations combined. This is after the limit they imposed of 20 max paper per author. With this rate, we will have more than 100k next year. Need better reforms urgently. #SciSci #Academia

"Hallu-citations are so 2023." Yet, I just got an @arxiv.bsky.social cs.AI endorsement request for a paper on -prompt optimization- Checked the references. Most were hallucinated. I guess the prompt still needs some optimization... PS. If you’re going to use AI, at least be better at using AI.

This is a really thought provoking piece on a topic I think about a lot these days - what does it mean to be a human researcher in the age of powerful AI? So I also created an open @semble.so collection - contributions welcome!

OpenAI's announcement of the proof of Navier-Stokes evoked many emotions - from amazement to anger to dread. TLDR; an asteroid is coming for intellectual life as a whole and we need to do something about it.
Millennium math problem solved by OpenAI may have "regurgitated" competitors unpublished work... also they spent more than $22 million in computing power in one week to scoop them. techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/o...

SPECIAL REPORT Last month, Alpha School invited people to follow student social media accounts "if curious about life in our high schools." I accepted their offer. What I've found shocks me. Forget the AI and ask instead: Is Alpha Schools a cult? Follow along for a summary of my findings.

This is fantastic. Wish more labs started doing this.
This summer I led a series of conversations in my lab about "AI" and our research. Some colleagues have shared "AI policies" for their labs and we discussed whether this would make sense for us. We decided it did not, and came up with a different approach. Please feel free to share & adapt!
I'll be considering PhD applicants for a Fall 2027 start date. I'd love to hear from prospective students interested in critical projects about AI, knowledge production, cultural narratives, and epistemic power. More info about our lab, and how to apply, here: www.crockettlab.org/joining-the-...

"Research as a service (RaaS)" aka modern paper mills(?) are here. For only $100k, submit a paper in Neurips/ICML/ICLR. Unfortunately, acceptance -NOT- guaranteed. #SciSci #Metascience #PredatoryPublishing
Spotted: The modern Paper Mill. Price tag: $100k. FastCode AI is offering Research-as-a-Service (RaaS): for $100k, you bring the problem and the data, they do the research, run experiments, write the manuscript. Target venues: NeurIPS, CVPR, ICLR, AAAI. Timeline: 3-4 months. #AcademicGossip
1. Recently I’ve received lots of emails from people I don’t know personally, asking for my feedback on their books or papers. They explain the connection between my work and theirs and ask me to take a look. The catch, of course, is that the emails are transparently, obviously, written by AI.

What if paper reading and reviewing was interactive and visual? Tools today assume a very passive way of engaging with a paper: you open a PDF and read linearly, top to bottom. But most of us already break that assumption: results first, figures before text, abstract then conclusion. 🧵 #scisci

Retractions in science don't work well. In our *new paper* we find widely known findings are easier to retract, possibly bc the retraction is relevant to more people, allowing information about it to spread socially @jevinwest.bsky.social @shahanmemon.bsky.social www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

A beautiful essay indeed, and great jumping off point for people across all fields of scholarship to reflect on what it is we are doing and why. A short thread >>
This gorgeous essay from the social-media-less Lily Hu is everything: on what it means to "do" philosophy amidst pressure to automate it (with lessons that travel much more broadly). Rhymes with brilliant insights from @biblioracle.bsky.social @janerosenzweig.bsky.social Ted Chiang & others
