A terribly shortsighted decision from Harvard! @janerosenzweig.bsky.social is among the voices most needed right now-- and writing centers are needed more than ever, especially when their directors (like Jane) devote so much time to thinking about (and teaching) the impact of AI on the liberal arts.

Faculty and academic staff already only tenuously protect educational value and degree integrity, and this “leadership” will ripple far beyond Harvard. Jane has been a crucial, clearheaded voice in adapting to a world with AI, shaping pedagogy and guiding scholars in asking the right questions.

This is such a loss for the Harvard community. Jane has been a leader and a steady voice in the conversation about university writing and AI nationwide but especially in New England. Carnegie Mellon did the exact same thing with our Writing Center while I was a grad student there... (1/2)

Reading these comments are worth your time. Upsetting to learn today that Harvard is dismantling its Writing Center and is laying off Jane Rosenzweig, its long-time director. Student voices here show what is lost in a move like this, and what an institution gains in a well led writing center.
