SRON@sronspace.bsky.social · 9mo agoSRON researchers and GHGSat present a global survey of methane emissions from 150+ landfills in Nature. They found differences between reported inventories and satellite estimates — showing satellites can reveal and locate major leaks to support mitigation.
Ilse Aben has received the NWO Stevin Prize from OCW directorgeneral Feite Hofman in The Hague. She is honored for the societal impact of TROPOMI, the Dutch space instrument mapping methane leaks worldwide — with an impact twice as large as all greenhouse gas emissions of the Netherlands.
Methane plumes have never been this pretty! Should still try to reduce those emissions though. Congratulations to @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social for this great visualization and thanks to the team at @sronspace.bsky.social providing the TROPOMI plume data.

Methane emissions from landfills are a key contributor to climate change. In the TWOS project, SRON works together with the Global Methane Hub, GHGSat, and local partners to support mitigation of those emissions using satellite data. The first data are now publicly available through the WasteMAP platform.

Great to see that 'Revealing Methane Super-Emitters and Methane Leakages' is identified as one of the 12 'Groundbreaking Science Discoveries' made using satellites. Sentinel-5P TROPOMI has been a real game changer for this work, including when used together with Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3.

Halfway through the second week of hashtag#COP29, we had another intense couple of days. My schedule included participation in an event at the Spanish Pavilion on results presented at the Climate Neutrality Forum earlier this year (Photo).
Currently at COP29 in Baku to further the use of satellite methane data to support emission mitigation. Looking forward to a productive second week!
