Tijana Karić, PhD. Description text: What do we actually mean when we talk about "reconciliation"? Most social psychological research focuses on the willingness to reconcile, mapping its relationship to variables like social identities, collective victim beliefs, and intergroup contact. Yet the definition of the very concept remains surprisingly vague. In this talk, I present a series of studies conducted with my collaborators to disentangle this meaning. Adopting a bottom-up approach, we investigated in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the armed conflict ended 30 years ago but deep societal divides persist. Drawing on a methodological sequence of focus groups, cross-sectional surveys, and Q methodology, I will discuss findings that highlight the complexity of the construct, often raising more questions than they answer. The session will conclude with a critical reflection on current frameworks and an invitation for a critical discussion on how we study reconciliation and where the field should go next.
