I love the sounds baby cranes make. It takes 2-5 years for young sandhills to grow the 2-3ft long bony coils of trachea (which grow literally into the bones of their thick, shield-like keels) to make the loud, trumpeting calls of their parents. They literally become organic French horns inside! 🪶

Good morning folks. It's @helenbennett.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay themes today which are #BirdsWithBerries, birds with berries. The Alt theme is #BirdyLongLegs, birds with legs that look too long for its body. #birds #ECK #naturephotography #ukbirding #CanonR5mkii @rspb.bsky.social #birdphotography

Autumn is a time for berries so today's #BirdOfTheDay is #BirdsWithBerries Any bird captured with berries, like this beautiful Bohemian waxwing 📷️ 🪶 ❤️ Alt: #BirdyLongLegs Any bird with legs that look way too long for its body! I'm heading out shortly but I will catch up later. Happy Wednesday! 😊👋

A photograph of a Bohemian waxwing bird perched amidst a dense thicket of cotoneaster branches heavily laden with clusters of vibrant red berries. The bird is positioned near the centre of the frame, facing right as viewed, and has just eaten a berry. Its smooth, greyish pinky brown plumage has a soft, almost velvety texture. The waxwing features a prominent, swept-back crest on its head and a distinct, sharp black mask running across its eyes down to a black throat patch. The bird's wings display intricate markings, including a bold black band outlined with bright yellow stripes along the primary feathers. Its short tail ends in a brilliant, crisp yellow band. The background is a complex network of tangled branches, leaves and berries. While the immediate surrounding branches and bright red berry clusters are sharply in focus, the foreground and background blurs out softly.
