If even Jim Lee has this issue it tells me that the mentality of working until you drop pervades every level of status in the industry. No comic is worth risking your wellbeing for; I lived in that grind mentality for years and it didn’t lead to anything professionally except creative burnout.

Jim Lee shares his private health struggles that led to Batman: Hush 2 delays, and a rethinking of his work-life balance. He's okay now, but is making some changes. Read on: www.thepopverse.com/comics-dc-co...

I grew up mostly without TV, but even so, I knew the value of Public Broadcasting. On this dreary, stupid day when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been dissolved, I shout out some of its heroes — people who made us a little more conscious.

Tomorrow I’m coming to the Northwest Museum of Cartoon Art for a talk and signing! 1-3 PM, Saturday, downtown Portland OR. Stop in and say hey, learn about comics process, see some giant-sized original art from Little Monarchs + other great display pieces at the museum! @nwmoca.bsky.social

NWMOCA Visit

I had the best event last night at the Heller Center for the Arts in Colorado Springs. So many kind souls. I knew it was gonna be good when I saw the snack table. Today I’m at library 21c at 11am, doing another event and signing. Thank you to Heidi and the crew. It’s so beautiful here!

Occasionally I do family portraits for people in a cartooned way — it’s a fun alternative to photography if you’re thinking of hiring someone for this kind of service. This is a crew from whom I bought our new old Land Cruiser (they happened to be art fans, so we worked a partial trade).

Family portrait

It takes a long time to write what’s valuable to me. Sometimes years of mess, like building a kite from potato peels. The peels can speak. They say: “You’re not a writer, my guy. Please stop.” Then comes a week where the wind catches my potato kite, and it’s in the sky, and I just have to hold on.

Try to figure out how a scene could work with no dialogue, and then taking breaks, imagine it a couple more times until you get to the most interesting way to show it play out. Now you're telling the story visually. Reward yourself with the possibility of some dialogue
