At the Ray LaMontagne concert last night, hearing "How Come" reminded me that a song written 20+ years ago about the world dealing with violence, daily hardship, and political corruption could have also been written last week as a commentary on contemporary America.

I wrote this piece ~6 years ago. Sadly, the umbrella over those who navigate life with some measure of daily fear has only expanded. The lack of adherence to rules and norms is not new to Indigenous, Black, Brown, and/or Queer folks. But we didn't want anyone to have to join us under here.
Tomorrow's my political violence class is NOT gonna reflect my syllabus. I can't always shift to discuss current events, but I'd be a complete dick not to offer my students space and guide them through a discussion tying Minneapolis' prior civilian killings with the most recent killings.
And people thought I was being a bit ridiculous by deciding to carry my passport card on my person at all times. It won't stop me from getting shot, but maybe it'll ensure I get home in a few days vice weeks.
Saying the officer who committed murder is a murderer is dangerous, but it's OK to claim that his victim was a domestic terrorist who literally ran him over.

The only thing cops are loyal to is cops. Not to the public, not to the law, not to public safety or anything like that. The only thing they care about is advancing their own protections and budgets, at the cost of the rest of society. And you see what happens to “good cops” who break the Blue Wall.

That was state murder in broad daylight, captured from multiple angles by multiple witnesses, and the people of Minneapolis have eyes. You support murder.
I saw this video of a Vietnam vet in the fur coat yelling at ICE and thought to myself, "this is missing something," before I realized, "Ah, of course, the Ether instrumental. It's so obvious."
A reason Black people told everyone to take police shootings seriously is because government sanctioned violence doesn’t occur in isolation. Every justification/defense emboldens them and pushes them towards widespread sanctioned violence knowing society will justify its use no matter how egregious.

Rather than grumble about those who've joined new gyms or returned to the gym as the new year begins, how about minding your business and remaining silent? But if you simply MUST do something, a nod of recognition and carrying on with your own workout goes a long way.
