It's honestly so crazy to me that we're facing a technological revolution that could displace millions of jobs in the middle of a housing affordability crisis and every day we talk about whether a trans woman is playing sports or if someone has a non-Anglo name.

The adage "the cruelty is the point" is overused but always completely apt with this administration's policies. The question of where that millions of dollars could have gone to help people thrive instead of suffer is overused, but has to be asked over and over. In every way, this is so twisted.
NEW: ICE plans to spend tens of millions of dollars on buying specialized gloves that pulse with electrical energy, which make it easier for agents to subdue people. 404 Media read the manual that says the gloves may even contribute to “sudden death.”
So true. Decided to watch the digital feed instead. Nearly full over Spain just now. It's so beautiful.
There’s not a cloud in the sky EXCEPT the one over the total solar eclipse, hahaha
When you read the details of this I really can’t see how this is anything but pay for play human trafficking.
I'd heard NYT had finally gotten access to the men sent to Eswatini. This from Nicholas Casey is the kind of incredible and *moral* work only big institutions can do, and should do more of. Grateful for "loudmouths" like Roberto Mosquera. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/12/m...
Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.
Before reimagining development data, remember what we’ve learned
Why we’re publishing a free, searchable, and ungated archive featuring a quarter-century of USAID evaluation reports.

I know they’re puffing up to be intimidating but also they just look like they’re spectacular and they know it
Feathered phenom 🐦 Kagus suddenly splay their head crests and wings to make themselves look larger, scaring away predators and defending their territory. Known as the "Ghost of the Forest" for their pale plumage and eerie calls, these flightless birds are actually quite gentle and docile.
struck by this clip of Josh Johnson standup: he doesn't really develop the theme, no real punchlines. he just says what people have been complaining about re: The Odyssey and everyone laughs for *3 minutes* because a professional comedian *could not improve upon it* www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKcv...
Some people were so mad about the casting of The Odyssey

If you want to know how scary and unjust this is for children with even some support, read Valeria Luiselli's "Tell Me How It Ends." Then imagine what it's like to face this process as a child all alone.
For a brief moment, there was Congressional and governmental support to ensure that children didn't face deportation alone. Then the Trump administration moved to gut the programs, and tens of thousands of kids who have lawyers now may lose them, while hundreds of thousands more go without counsel.

I haven't seen The Odyssey yet -- work hasn't slowed down to a midsummer pace -- but I have wanted to. And this beautiful essay just made me rearrange my schedule to see it as soon as I can.
I didn’t really have any interest in seeing The Odyssey until I read this. open.substack.com/pub/flintdel...
The moral clarity of this statement is astonishing only in the fact that it is so rare these days.

If you've worked with me in recent weeks as a freelancer, I've probably shared this news with you, though it's time to share it more broadly: @prismreports.org is in serious trouble, y'all. We have lost half a million dollars in philanthropic support & we have almost no secure funding for next year.
