Our 3 weeks offshore on the R/V Neil Armstrong have officially come to an end! What a blast, I haven’t had this much fun on a fieldwork excursion in over a decade. Lovely people, successful science, & epic wildlife!

The sun setting over the ocean on our last full day of a research cruise at sea. The sky is orange, and wispy clouds partially cover the sun

Research Cruise AR103 Thread: Work & Life Onboard Why does the clock say cheese on it? 🧀 every day on the R/V Armstrong we enjoy “cheese thirty” at 2:30pm, when a full charcuterie board is laid out. Phenomenal boat tradition.

This great blue heron caught such a variety of prey in just a tiny patch of river! 🪶🌿 Some shots from my final land-based birding session today, as tomorrow I head off to board a vessel for a nearly 1-month research cruise offshore!

This week on 2 nights, I led an outreach event where we went to a reservoir on campus and showed participants how many different animal species you can observe with sound alone! I need folks to see how fun having an ultrasonic detector and listening to bat echolocation in real time is 🦇🦊🔊🌿

Had a great time photographing this guy in my neighborhood until I realized I was standing outside of a sorrority with a giant camera 🥴 to the ladies of Kappa Delta, I promise I’m here for the hawk on your roof and nothing nefarious! 🪶🌿

Today I finally got a shot of a cedar waxwing with its crest raised, and it sounds like my marbled godwit found yesterday may be only the 2nd report of this bird in the county ever (the 1st being 40+ years ago)!!!! We’re on a birding roll!!!! 🪶🌿

My first time adding a new bird to an eBird hotspot’s all-time bird list! I found this previously unreported marbled godwit at low tide yesterday hanging out among greater yellowlegs and foraging on the mudflats a ways inland on Oyster River 🌿🪶

Got shots and audio of a Cooper’s hawk chasing a red-tailed hawk tonight on my birding excursion!!!! 🪶🌿 Still debating whether it was worth accidentally disturbing a wasps nest shortly after and having my bare legs absolutely wrecked 😌
