Trying to describe what it’s like working inside British universities at the moment is very hard. One small vignette: not a single week of my teaching this semester looks the same as any other. We have virtually no courses/modules that are taught by

Thank you so much to the hundreds of trans people and allies who joined today's mass lobby! The queue stretched across both sides of the road outside Parliament, and so many MPs participated in meetings and responded to green cards. Together, we delivered a powerful message for change 🏳️‍⚧️

What one has to remember, when reading an AI puff piece that has plausible-looking notes of caution in it, is that The Guardian is in partnership with OpenAI. I found myself looking for the "sponsored advertorial" badge that never came.

A Dr Seuss-style story written in seconds alerted me to the power – and perils – of the technology. But how can children embrace it without forgetting core skills?

Wales has stopped ALL gender affirming surgeries! Schools have just declared an end to social transition and inclusion for trans kids. I do not think enough people are paying attention to how utterly and quickly trans rights have been stripped away in the uk!

Deeply concerning: referrals, assessments and scheduled gender-affirming surgery through the Welsh Gender Service have been paused pending an independent clinical review. Other parts of the service remain open.

For those of us outside Wales - now is the time to be following Wales trans organisations and activists, and keeping an eye on how we might act in solidarity. Also potentially writing to our own local representatives and expressing our concern.

This is the most fucked up and immediately harmful policy decision I think I've ever seen in adult trans healthcare in the UK, and that's saying something. The Welsh Gender Service is one of the best in the country. It is widely praised by the patients it helps. That is why it is being targeted.

🚨🆕 @wearequeeraf.com and @whatthetrans.com can reveal that the NHS has cancelled all gender-affirming surgeries for adult patients of the Welsh Gender Service Some trans patients received the news just days or even hours before they were due to take place 👇 www.wearequeeraf.com/nhs-cancels-...

We’ve written to the UK Supreme Court with a formal complaint about its permanent “The Law and Us” exhibition and its presentation of For Women Scotland TACC, alongside @translucent.org.uk and @transparentaction.bsky.social, are calling for a full review of its wording, imagery, balance and context

@supremecourt.uk Showing their bias on permanent public display. We are watching and keeping the receipts. This crusade will end. We will ensure all involved are held accountable. supremecourt.uk/news/new-exh...

Image of Lady Rose of Colmworth, Justice of the Supreme Court, with a quote reading "The judgment hand down was unusual because no one knew the result in advance. Our usher had warned the packed court room: no cheering or shouting. When lord Hodge announced our decision, there was a gasp then the women joined hands silently, many weeping, it was a memorable moment."

Also, there IS a crisis in British universities. It has nothing to do with EDI or allegations of plagiarism. The Higher Ed sector is heaving under the weight of managerialism, and brilliant institutions like Exeter, Nottingham, Sussex, are being gutted. Can we get 53 articles about that in 16 days?

I am resharing this in light of recent news that HESA, the NHS and other bodies have changed their data collection approach to sex and gender, erasing trans people’s realities in light of the Sullivan Review.

Jay Todd 🏳️‍⚧️@jaytoddgla.bsky.social · 8mo ago

📣 Today @felicitycallard.bsky.social and I have published the first peer-reviewed response to the 'Sullivan Review' of research and data on sex and gender. doi.org/10.1111/tran... The Review could threaten trans rights and inclusion, erode academic freedom, and undermine research quality.

Graphic reading 'the UK Government-commissioned 'Sullivan Review' of sex and gender in data and research collection threatens British research and trans inclusion. Here's why.'

HESA is now citing the Sullivan Review to mandate categorising all student data in England and Wales by binary “sex at birth” - no possibility to answer otherwise (unless non-British national with different “legal sex”). Gender to now be “gender reassignment”. www.hesa.ac.uk/collection/2...

"Human beings are very good at telling the sex of somebody that they're talking to; we've evolved over thousands of years to be able to do that." Which is why, after thousands of years, we now require you and your good friends to legislate on this pressing issue—proportionately, of course.

🚨 Bridget Phillipson remains as the Minister for Women and Equalities After FWS Phillipson publicly stated that trans women should use men's toilets. She recently signed into force harmful & discriminatory statutory guidance which will devastate trans lives. Suggests no change re. trans rights.

In July 2024, JK Rowling said called the Cass Review, "the single most authoritative and comprehensive review of the affirmative model ever conducted." Today, she retweeted a tweet saying that Cass should be "derided" for her "ridiculous comments" on the puberty blocker trial. Do you see?
