btw i played around with ellipsus.com this time and i enjoyed it! i'm a gdocs hater, but scrivener (my beloved) doesn't have a good way to do beta work, so i grumpily copy and paste everything into gdocs for beta. if you're looking for docs alternatives, you might check out ellipsus!

It’s bizarre to me seeing this stuff presented as an advance or an opportunity for growth or creativity, because to me, it’s the opposite. It’s the best way to ensure that nothing interesting ever happens, and that whatever isn’t understood or made today can never be understood or made at all. /fin

True newness and true learning are still the work of human minds. There may be a time when mechanical brains can do this; what do I know? But copying the status quo and re-presenting it is not that. It will never advance; it will never improve. It is frozen in time, error, and bias.

It has been amazing to me how absent from many conversations about it has been the fact that it arrests all thinking at the last point where it was written down and slurped. If you could take even just all the books you love, combine them, and rearrange them, you would still get nothing truly new.

It has always been a problem with the use of the phrase “machine learning” that models like these, unlike human beings, cannot actually learn anything. If the status quo is racist, they will remain racist. They can parrot antiracism, not because they have learned it, but because someone else did.
