PSE, polling, GR by day. Stories in Analog, Lightspeed, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Year's Best Canadian F&SF.

My 10,000-word novelette 'Aspect of the Moth' just got into Beneath Ceaseless Skies. It's the 15th Churchlands/Five Deserts story and the 6th to feature Tyrra the Painted, dye-worker turned wandering sorcerer. Also the first (published) to explicitly join that setting to my Broken Season stories.

Over the last two months, have completely replaced gym time with digging and digging accessories. Here's the latest indulgence. My life is work, kids, writing when rarely feasible, and dirt. Dirt in all varieties. Dirt at all hours. A little more dirt as a treat.

til this core memory has a sequel (released almost 30 years after the original). baby's first thriller, featuring eugenicist villains who are both colossal, ineffective dipshits and catastrophically evil. haddix mastered the kiddie dystopia thing long before the wave hit. underappreciated talent

Running out of time, Margaret peterson haddix. The very 90s illustration features a girl in front of a long cabin in a prairie dress stepping through a portal in the air to a modern age where she's wearing jeans an there are cars. It is super cool if it's 1996 and you're in 3rd grade.

Googling with GREAT interest the various category winners and runners-up of this Canadian Armed Forces science fiction contest. Almost $50k in prize money dished out. Submissions opened in early October last year; I wonder if they're gearing up for a second round soon. Congrats to the winners.

In my quest to eat healthier, made a cauliflower and lentil soup so irredeemable that four hours of aggressive ventilation later, there are ongoing Febreze patrols and bedtime impacts. I have become persona non grata, which is appropriate for someone in the biochemical weapons research business.

Stayed up all night checking weather radar and certain drainage situations every fifteen minutes to make sure all the fixes did their jobs. Spent the night watch working on my business and, in the cold light of day, most of the work will keel.

It's one fifth, at least where I work. One fifth of undergrads are severely food insecure by Health Canada standards. One fifth is also the number who are currently skipping meals at least once a week due to the cost of food. Don't even get me started on how bad things are for Indigenous students.

Love and respect McMaster's student union running free soup and bread, and Waterloo's running pay-what-you-can meals. But man do I wish student food insecurity stats were not so crushing and they didn't need to do this. www.thesil.ca/news/msu-sou...

This novelette is my second Recommended Story in Locus; the first was 'Crickets in Lost Light,' another Ander Carmora piece. 'Fletcher's Flights' finds our turncoat tithe-collector older and dustier, skulking in the prairie coulees between the Five Deserts and the ravenous Churchlands.

Beneath Ceaseless Skies - Fletcher’s Flights by Jonathan Olfert

In smoky light, Carmora watched for jackals and looters (which he'd been at times) and Churchmen (which he'd also been), one hand by the short-sword on his thigh. For months, he'd ranged back and fort...

So, so excited for Alberta Time (permanent UTC-6) to kick in, you have no idea. Cutting the time difference for half the year has a couple of positive effects for my family and work. Can't wait.

Four days of shoveling have forcibly reminded me why I no longer do this for a living. I'm only capable of remaining vertical because my blood is currently 38% pumpkin spice latte by volume.

Read KAYAK by @kristalstittle.bsky.social while fighting water. Think 'The Long Dark' in Ontario, with the same personal, authentic sense of place as TO THE LAST MAN, Zane Grey's love letter to every nook and cranny of the Tonto Basin. The Canadiana I needed this flood season.
