Ontario jails are using an AI tool that claims to predict prisoners’ behaviour. And it’s disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. An investigation by @desmondcole.bsky.social reveals the province knew the tool would discriminate against Black people—and used it anyway.

I know this isn't the point, but this seems to have come from a hack by the same people who hacked Canvas. Interesting to see what would have happened with everyone's data if they hadn't paid the ransom. Perhaps putting everyone's data together is a bad idea?

The appeal of the concept for academics is easy to understand. It offers the appearance of neutrality. Equal responsibility. Like journalism’s "both sides" logic, it lets us diagnose political crisis while appearing detached, balanced and scientific.
