At least Pakistani humor and meme game is unbeatable in these otherwise concerning times.
It appears the gods of MWIEDC have decided Pittsburgh is not midwest. How else can I explain getting rejected twice in two years :(
Here are the 25 institutions that receive the most NIH funding (98% of HHS is NIH). Basically, they're large schools with large hospitals. They receive 50% of all NIH funding. Source: ncses.nsf.gov/surveys/fede... (table 26) (Not going to do a whole thread but thought folks might be interested.)
Put another way: only 7 of the top 20 university R&D spenders are also on the top 20 endowments list (if you treat UC as separate institutions)
🚨New dataset alert 🚨 In collaboration with a stellar team at Banxico, Harvard, the World Bank, and ITAM, we built a dataset of demographics and labor market variables at the local-labor-market level for Mexico! Download here: www.banxico.org.mx/DataSetsWeb/... #EconSky #Mexico
One of pashto music's most under rated songs. Fay khan was way ahead of his time for a music genre still stuck in the past. He came up with such melodies right when WoT was heating up and artists in Peshawar were getting killed daily. Wonder where he is now www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRic...

📣 Our paper "How to improve education outcomes most efficiently" was recently published in the Journal of Development Economics! Co-authored w/ @daveevansphd.bsky.social Filmer Glennerster Sabarwal Rogers. Rewarding to see this work inform research & policy www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
People are often surprised when I tell them this: both Twitter and Facebook/insta/threads are now specifically engineered to downgrade, hide, suppress real journalism. If this platform is different, that's a huge change
May I add that it is not just students, though they are more vulnerable, but faculty on visas of different types who are also at risk. Please share resources with Chloe if you know of any. #EconSky
Soon I'll be sharing resources on how we can support our international students in higher education going forward. If you have suggestions of things to make sure we include in the resource list please comment, DM or email me! And please uplift this request. #EconSky #AcademicSky

Catch me here talking about international students concerns over upcoming changes to immigration policy (I also talked a little about my university’s lack of response so far to reassure students but that didn’t make it in.) www.bbc.com/news/article...
Question about std errors: In an RCT, treated people are randomly assigned to "pods" and interact (e.g., treatment = WhatsApp group membership). The norm (e.g. Cai-Szeidl) is to cluster on indiv for control group + on pod for treatment group. Why is clustering needed if any ICC is due to treatment?
Do folks, who have reviewed economics grant proposals, have anything to add? #EconSky 📈📉
#thread with great grant writing tips
My fantastic student, Priyoma Mustafi, is on the market. You should hire her because she 1- has a very interesting #JMP combining experimental, gender, and development topics 2- is super productive. Already has two R&Rs in top journals 3- is a great colleague sites.google.com/view/priyoma...
I am on the #EconJobMarket ! 🚨 JMP Alert 🚨 Individuals fail to incorporate information held by their spouses. Is it because they are generally reluctant to learn from their spouse? In my #JMP, I show: NO! It's because communication is challenging in the absence of expertise. 🧵below:
Consider the simplest DiD setup with panel data. T = 2, controls X(i) don't change over time. D(i) is the "ever treated" indicator, f2(t) the second period time dummy. W(i,t) the time-varying treatment W(i,t) = D(i)*f2(t). The X(i) appear flexibly to allow selection and heterogeneous trends.

Fascinating jmp from Morgan Foy at UC Berkeley. "Union members appear negatively selected by teacher value added." Decertifying teachers unions improves student educational outcomes. morganfoy.github.io Adviser is @guoxu.bsky.social
I am not American so I wonder why did I spend last few days explaining a lot M*sk propaganda posts to my Pakistani friends who were inclined to believe him. Such a thankless immigrant life :)
For me: Paper 1 written and sent for review. 9 months later, still no word. Paper 2 (review paper) written and sent for review. Reviewers rejected because they didn't like the way it was organized and I have to rewrite. Paper 3 written and sent for review....reject and reanalyze. Man, I'm done!
At my school: Unit A: You need unit B approval before WE approve that u can APPLY for a grant. Unit B: Fill export control from Unit C bcoz this is an international project to *check notes* work on mental health Unit C: Your laptop will go with you? (I haven't even applied for the grant yet)
Why does research take so long: exhibit # 5486 Unit A: to fill in this form, you need permission from Unit B. Me: emailing Unit B for permission. ... Unit B - two weeks later: here is a form created by Unit A that you need to fill in - no permission from us needed. Me: emailing Unit A & B: 🤨?!
I am low key disappointed that this quote tweet(?) got only one like. If you haven't, please go ahead and watch the remade Battle Star Galactica (and apologies in advance for the last season). #syfi #AI

This is vintage @pseudoerasmus.bsky.social thread of old twitter days. It provides a succinct overview of the role "institutions" played (or did not play) in pre- AJR development economics. As an admirer of AR's work, I find this contextualization of AJR very useful.
Here is my extremely brief (potted) history of institutions in macro-development thinking -- just before the AJR intervention. I had most of these thoughts prior to the Nobel week, but now they are crystallising.
