Grateful to @newsweek.com for covering our new research on ICE arrests in @pnas.org (with @chloeneast.bsky.social & Ellie Cox).
Researchers found the share of ICE arrestees with criminal convictions fell as arrests surged under Trump.
ICYMI - a few weeks ago @chloeneast.bsky.social + Minnesota's own @aaronsojourner.org joined @ericawilli.bsky.social for a deep dive into the economic cost of DHS attacks on immigrants in our communities. Get caught up here 👇
The Cost of DHS Attacks on Immigrants
The Trump administration's deployment of DHS agencies—such as ICE—has caused irreparable harm to our communities, neighbors, and families across the country. The economic costs are also substantial—an...

hope this chart helps more people see where we've been and why we need to fully abolish ICE, not just reform and rebrand it
My paper is out today in PNAS documenting how ICE activity in Trump 2.0 compares to the last 10 years and the mismatch between the action and the rhetoric. Joint with the fabulous @caitlinpatler.bsky.social and @elizabethacox.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
"Although arrests spiked at the outset of both Trump presidencies, the share of arrested individuals with criminal convictions fell significantly... A shift in ICE tactics partly explains this pattern, but even conditional on tactic, the share with a criminal conviction declined as arrests rose."

"Our results show a fundamental mismatch between the justifications for intensified immigration enforcement & the empirical patterns of that enforcement’s implementation." This valuable study puts so many communities' experiences in context. The data will also be so useful for others. Thank you!

Out today!! Our new @pnas.org paper (w @chloeneast.bsky.social & @elizabethacox.bsky.social) examines variation in ICE arrests from 2015 to today, exposing just how unprecedented things are today—and how/why.

Hola from Mexico City! VERY excited to be here for the next week sharing and learning with other immigration scholars from around the Americas. Shoutout to Giovanni Peri and Tatiana Hiller at the @ucdavis.bsky.social Global Migration Center for organizing!
TFW you are having a pretty normal summer day trying to find motivation to work and then you are pulled into your aging parents caregiving and wish you could just work. I'm tired y'all and can we mandate therapy for everyone please?

Watching the Atlantic embarrass themselves is good entertainment. The question I have for folks is at what point do I no longer agree to do interviews with outlets whose politics are so transparently harmful? I've been wondering this about the NYT for years now... Any insights?

Left-wing challenger Melat Kiros upsets 15-term incumbent in Colorado
I am stunned that the constitutional question was so close. I thought it would be 6–3 or 7–2. It is profoundly disturbing that four justices would allow either the president or Congress to rewrite the plain text of the 14th Amendment. This is obviously a good outcome, but the margin is alarming.
5-4 for what it explicitly says in the constitution is incredible. They were this close to undoing the civil war entirely. bsky.app/profile/mjsd...

The Supreme Court's second opinion is NRSC v. FEC. By a 6–3 vote, the court guts another campaign finance statute and overturns a 2001 precedent that upheld restrictions on political parties' coordinated expenditures with candidates. The three liberals dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

JFC I don’t know how many more ways I can say that my decade of research and the research of others find that deportations are bad for the economy and this decision will only harm workers.
The Supreme Court just ruled that the Trump admin can terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haiti and Syria, and jeopardized 1.3 MILLION TPS holders across the country. This decision is wrong. It’s bad for our communities, our economy and our country.
