Sometimes the most unassuming artefacts are utterly incredible! Take this piece of wood … It is a spear point worked from yew about 420,000 years ago! 🤯 Known as the ‘Clacton Spear’ it is the world’s oldest known preserved wooden spear! Natural History Museum, London 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows the so-called Clacton Spear point which was found in 1911 in Lower Paleolithic sediments on the foreshore at Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. It is a brown wooden spear point worked from a yew branch. At the lower end the wood is uneven where it was roughly broken in antiquity. At the top end, the wood has been worked so that it tapers to a thin point, the tip of which has now warped into a slight curve. Since it was originally found, the spear point has shrunk and is now 36.7 cm, with a maximum diameter of 3.6 cm. It is supported by two thin metal display stands above a grey surface inside a glass display case. The museum label suggests the owner probably used the spear as a lethal weapon to stab prey at close range, generating enough force to pierce the animal's skin. On display at the Natural History Museum in London.
