The 2025 Japan Prize has been awarded to CORDAP’s Executive Director, Professor @carlosduartephd.bsky.social , for his groundbreaking contributions to marine science and pioneering research on blue carbon.

CORDAP is proud to announce that our Executive Director, Prof@carlosduartephd.bsky.social has been awarded the 2025 Japan Prize—one of the world’s most prestigious scientific honors—for his groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of marine ecosystems and pioneering research on blue carbon.
On Mnemba Island, in northern Unguja, Tanzania, everyone depends on corals. This has been true for many generations. The reefs support artisanal fishing and serve as a major attraction for tourists. Unfortunately, decades of overuse have severely degraded the reefs.
