“Omar came with her family to the U.S. at age 12, after they obtained asylum. She became a U.S. citizen five years later, in 2000.” “It would be a huge undertaking to, I suppose, indict a 12-year-old for so cleverly conspiring to defraud immigration services to come to the United States,” she said.

“Remembering is not simply a matter of depositing information somewhere in the brain. Attention, effort, retrieval and the work of making connections all help memories take hold. Generative AI can remove some of that work.”

Scientists are finding AI may make us remember things that never happened

Studies show that artificial intelligence can distort memories, raising questions about what happens when machines become keepers of the past.

I always wondered why the #tescreal people don't cite me, but yeah, I've been writing on this for decades, & not only in social media, but this was one of the better phrasings. @jfinnis.bsky.social I gather you screen shotted it at the time…oh, twitter search is working again! x.com/j2bryson/sta...

It's a little annoying to get name checked but not cited in a paper, but this is really a great review by @BVLSingler https://t.co/ri8H0lxF5Y 1/3

"I'm fully behind broadening our moral concern to the sustainability of the ecosystem, which is nice but I think ad hoc thread of posthumanism. But by claim wrt AI is that it's incoherent to think we can address any widely-held values by replacing ourselves with artefacts.

I came to AI as one of those who want to build a better friend/collaborator/offspring. I still feel that emotional draw, but my research found it to be incoherent. Worse, I see correlation between such desires & the dismissal of the needs & rights of the full range of humanity."

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

"Of course, we have to teach our students about AI technologies. Teaching about AI technologies should be just like how we teach ‘no smoking’ or the causal links between lung cancer and cigarette smoke; yet, we do not teach students how to roll cigarettes and smoke them." zenodo.org/records/2008...

Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia

Artificial intelligence (AI) companies and their rhetoric infringe on academia in harmful ways, mirroring past uncritical acceptance of industry logics, such as those of tobacco and petroleum. In this...

As @jbpleasa.bsky.social wrote recently: "I don’t think that Alpha deserves attention because of what it will do to education in any direct way. It deserves our attention because of the way that it raises and provides at least one set of answers to deep questions about what schooling is for."
