Traveling the country to find myself. Home sick for a place that no longer exists. Traveler. Trains. Highways. Wide Open Spaces. Tag along on some of my trips on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@mb_

We asked people who experienced "sweeps" of homeless encampments to write about it in their own words. In Portland, Teresa Stratton told us about how her husband’s ashes were taken in a removal:

Handwritten text on a notecard: My husbands ashes; I made me feel alone scared, empty, now I wonder where he is and if he's all still in his urn and if hes ok and I hope he's not in the dump

Hitching a ride in the desert. No cell service. Without explanation, the driver suddenly swerves off to the shoulder, gets out, starts rummaging through his trunk. The sound of tools clanking together. I was wondering if this was where I was to be put out to pasture. Do I jump out and run?
