A couple of very exciting impulse purchases from @fruitmarket.bsky.social while I was in Edinburgh on Monday! I've been wanting to get something else from Black Lodge Press for a while, and A Year in the Allotment is a charming zine. Plus reflections on being trans by the late, great Rachel Pollack.

Two booklets/zines are sitting on a cushion patterned with a psychedelic flower design. Trans Central Station by Rachel Pollack has a bright yellow cover with white, red, blue and green text in a thin font saying her name and the title. A Year in the Allotment is a white zine with a bold graphic look; the title is in bright red capitals splashed across the whole page and bisected by some bright green illustrations of plants and the planet Earth.

Sugimoto’s Pine Trees did it for me.

A screenshot from a website of an exhibition in 2002.
The gallery is the Fruitmarket, Edinburgh.
The artist is photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The exhibition’s title is The Architecture of Time.
Below the title is an image of one of the artworks. It is one of his Pine Teees photographs. It is a very large piece, illustrated by a human figure on the right edge of the landscape orientated image. This suggests that the piece is several metres long& over a metre in height, hung to have its upper edge at around 2 metres.
It is greyscale. Strangely, I remember it as being in colour.
Below the photograph it gives the exhibition dates, 2 August to 21 September 2002. It was the first showing of this exhibition.
The gallery space was quiet, & I was taken by a notion to stand right up close, shut my eyes, walk backwards as far as I dare & then reopen them. I then did the reverse process.
It changed how I experience art.
