This is a fascinating case, but apparently no AI #histoslop. According to «Interfoto,» the image comes from a Munich auction house — which, along with Alamy’s statement that it was uploaded 20 years ago, suggests that it is a «real,» physical forgery created without AI (but maybe some Photoshop)

On 19 July 1920, the Second Congress of the Communist International opened at Petrograd. M. P. T. Acharya attended as a delegate of the Indian Revolutionary Association and at the congress met Abani Mukherjee, M. N. Roy, and Mohamed Shafique.

Just learned that the great historian of The Russian Revolution Alexander Rabinowitch has passed away at the age of 91. I never met him, but his brilliant studies of the revolution in Petrograd have had a massive impact on my thinking since I first encountered them in high school.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 20 June 1998. Conrad Schumann committed suicide (aged 56). He had been an East German police officer who escaped from East to West Berlin in 1961. His escape was memorably captured in a famous photo by Peter Leibing.
