Highlights from Labour conference. A National Care Service is coming. Energy bills will be brought down through the Great British Grid. More funding coming to Lancashire, including for strengthening for domestic abuse and for parent/child support. Cracking down on rogue landlords. Hope again 🌹

I'm proud that Labour is giving children in West Lancashire the best start in life. It was great to catch up with Bite Back 2030 campaigners recently to celebrate the expansion of free school meals. The Labour Government has also recently announced the biggest overhaul of school food in a generation

For too long, people in West Lancashire haven't had the legally protected right to bereavement leave following the passing of an immediate family member or after pregnancy loss. The Government has just announced that every employee will have the right to bereavement leave from April 2027.

I visited Ormskirk West End Primary School to see their breakfast club, which is now funded by Labour. It was fantastic to hear how much the children love going to breakfast clubs and seeing their friends before the school day start. We now have 15 Best Start breakfast clubs across West Lancashire 🙌

⚠️Simonswood Stink update⚠️ Earlier this year, Windmill Services' permit was revoked. They have now left the site and no further waste is being added. The mounds of waste remain, continuing the Simonswood Stink. I've written to the EA to ask them to clear the remaining waste immediately.

Medical letters, bills and other important post arriving late or not at all. This is what I hear from so many people in West Lancashire. I joined forces with other Labour MPs to urge Ofcom to call for stronger action against Royal Mail. https://ow.ly/l52O50ZOhJk

Royal Mail blasted for missing delivery targets as Ofcom urged to act

EXCLUSIVE: MPs accused Royal Mail of not taking the delays seriously, leaving the public missing hospital appointments, court dates, or having late fees added to bills that simply didn’t come

The Bill that was brought to us today was not safe.  If it had passed as it was, vulnerable people would have been at very real risk of coercion into assisted dying or out of fear of being a burden.   We need to prioritise ensuring equal access to our world class palliative care across the country.

The Government’s equalities impact assessment on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill found that people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities & elderly people are more at risk of • Being coerced into assisted dying • Feeling a burden • Feeling pressured to end their life

The government is reviewing & pausing local government reorganisaiton in Lancashire, following new legal advice they have received. I’m pleased that SoS for Housing, Communities and Local Government Angela Rayner is committed to Lancashire getting the best possible LGR and devolution package.

I'm delighted to welcome County Councillor Nigel Swales to the Labour Party, from Reform UK. Nigel, like many, has realised that Reform can't deliver for Skem. In defecting to Labour, Nigel is putting Skem first. I look forward to working closely with Nigel.

As children go back to school across West Lancs, Labour is giving families more breathing space. We’ve capped how many items of branded school uniform a school can require a child to wear, on top of free breakfast clubs, 30 hours of free childcare & expanding free school meals.

Last month I shared my letter to West Lancs Borough Council to ask for more information about the poor waste collection service. This is the response I received. WLBC have said they are working on how to improve this service for the future and I’ll be holding them to account on this promise.
