Adventures in Asian Cinema - podcasted by Matthew, Marty, and Carlos.

RIP Tony Rayns, one of the few English-language critics who genuinely knew what they were talking about (most of the time) when it came to East Asian cinema, especially Hong Kong's.

Frankly I find the inclusion of The Babadook in this list of iconic queer characters "for the memes" offensive. Consider instead Tobio in Wild Zero, a trans girl in a cheap Japanese zombie film who is allowed to get the guy, and has a metal singer berate her beau over his cultural transphobia.

Two Japanese people sitting at a rest stop bench. Tobio, a trans woman in a pale blue shirt and beige shorts, smiles shyly as the protagonist, Ace, grins at her. He is in jeans and a metalhead leather jacket. Her arms are folded, his posture is open.

One film not in English; Divine is the only trans character or performer mentioned; not a single non-white character; no films from outside Eurowestern context; nothing earlier than 70s or more recent than The Babadook. This is so incredibly embarrassing. www.dumptheguardian.com/film/2026/ju...
