#Watched Stranger (1991) - another banger. Unpredictable cold open leads into a low key character piece/thriller with cabbie Yuko Natori as a cab driver being Duel-stalked through the streets of Tokyo. Great Michael Mann-esque atmosphere and neon, and a terrific synth score from Yuji Ohno.

I’ve made Ulrike Ottinger’s acquaintance and I’m a little head over heels. Ticket of No Return (1979), while inseparable from West Bloc queer counterculture (and therefore existing, or resisting, Fassbinderisms), drifts like a Rivette and Tati slow dance costumed by Demy. Completely in love.

#Watched Neo Chimpira: Zoom Goes the Bullet (1990) - V cinema box set pivots hard from action/violence to indie drama/comedy and eroticism as Sho Aikawa takes the stage as a junior Yakuza facing an existential crisis. Aikawa is a baby here but he’s terrific, mixing boastful pride with sheer terror.

They hated him for telling the truth. The Ninja Empire is evil and we must reform it in his name.
