At this point honestly shout out to the students who half ass their homework making it obvious it isn’t AI. Meanwhile looking at one of the nicest assignments I’ve ever seen 🤔

Tonight I was behind a car that was the same make and model as my 2019 car and it had a Gore Lieberman 2000 bumper sticker and… I don’t even know but I thought I should share.
I bought my first ACA plan two years ago. It was $595 a month, this year it was $688 a month. Next year, with a higher deductible, it is $821 a month… I hate this effing timeline

Still server issues. Now Laura Watkins (head of science policy at STScI) is saying new deadline tomorrow, Oct. 1st at 5pm EDT for all proposers.
STScI says deadline extended 1 hour to 9pm EDT, unless issues persist in which case this time will be updated

#JWSTC6 APT has crashed with ~8 minutes before the deadline tonight. Chatter says the deadline will be extended but we don't know until when...

All the replies to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social’s posts are wild to me. Like I can absolutely envision something like this existing. But the sheer amount of work required to make it better/easier/less time consuming is absolutely not even remotely worth it to me (ignoring environment, ethics, etc)
I am sincerely happy for you (environmental and political issues aside) but my point stands that most people — dare I say those we might call normal people — simply do not think of their lives this way. For them to train an agent they would have to first do a lot of emotional and cognitive work.
A thinking that I find…something is I have yet to be surprised about who is all in on GenAI and who isn’t. Every time I’m like yup that tracks
This is the Stolen Neighbors Quilt. Each of the 11,000 squares represents a person taken by ICE in Minnesota.
I'm under no illusions about how things are or what the trajectory is. But I'm also excited for the future because that is where I will hang out with the people I care about and do the things I like doing, or haven't done before. Weird but telling that this holds less appeal for much richer people.
The sunny side of this delusion is the computer gives you a flying car and makes it so you don't have to work. The blackpill one is that it wipes us out via some cinematic method TBD. Two futures you don't actually have to live in. Both are abdications, and embarrassingly childish on their face.
It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.
Ok unrelated to my car. A thing I’m *still* not used to about Maryland that feels like magic is multiple growing seasons. I mostly gardened in Montana which, well it snowed one 4th of July as a child so. I planted these a few weeks ago. Fall garden what
Does Bluesky have car nerds? I need help. I got my oil changed and new brake pads installed today. The whole thing was a CF, which is why I’m asking you not them. When I got home I discovered a piece of black plastic in my cup holder. Google lens swears it’s a piece of my car. Im less convinced
The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.
Oregon data centers by the numbers: 111 facilities consume nearly one-quarter of state’s power, according to new report
A first-of-its-kind report details the footprint of the controversial facilities.

I’m watching Mystery, Alaska and having Thoughts about AI. Time to put down the internet for a while.
I took my class on a “field trip” across campus to see a colleagues lab today. Whooo boy I need to do a better job of using the absurdly amazing resources on my own campus. I’m sorry you are doing what in the basement of Malone

There is a class I team teach every semester. There are three instructors. 20 students. And somehow every semester they don’t notice that we are strategically spaced throughout the room. I sit in the back row. So today I got to stand up and remind them I can see their laptop screens…
More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.
The amount of money I saw one department paying for several AI services in a school year could cover the University’s pay one price textbook costs for nearly their entire enrolled student body in said department
