Just finished teaching my last day of class. We had daily Darby Ducks to create a fun atmosphere & thank students for contributing in discussion. Got a lovely affirming comment: “you didn’t teach as many details about content but what we learned is more important for everyday *life*.” That’s a win!🎉

And @flowerdarby.bsky.social's second argument is a civics one. We already have a nightmarish landscape re: politics and such, and that was before AI-powered misinformation hit the scene. We need to prepare our communities to deal with that. #NHETC24

In this session, @flowerdarby.bsky.social is making a couple of strong arguments for teaching AI. One is that employers are paying a premium for AI-savvy employees, and some of our students don't have the time and resources to learn AI on their own. That's an equity argument. #NHETC24

Regarding the elephant-bot in the room, students will cheat, yes, but some realize that's not useful. @flowerdarby.bsky.social shares the metaphor of a track runner deciding whether to use an electric scooter during training. Who would do that if they're serious about their track meet? #NHETC24

via @flowerdarby.bsky.social: A recent Inside Higher Ed survey of provosts indicated that just 20% of institutions are working on or have completed AI policies. And just 14% are engaged in a curriculum review looking at what's needed re: AI literacy. #NHETC24

I hadn’t heard it put like Jeremiah did, but I wholeheartedly agree. Teaching online is hard. Those who get it and who do it well are passionate and therefore excellent teachers in person too.
