I grew up in Arkansas and spent gobs of time at our local public library. Getting my first library card that was MINE was a **huge** big deal. The librarians knew me by name. I read voraciously and expansively. It is no exaggeration to say I would not be the person I am today had this law existed.

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.

So basically, being "realistic and revolutionary" requires us to strike fear (see: "cold sweat") in our students? What if we want to inspire motivation, curiosity, and self-determination? I reject the premise.

Hilarious and enlightening activity in today's academic orientation (I did not come up with the idea; Jered Bright did). Students wrote professional emails to profs on the board, and we brainstormed how to make them even better. Then they wrote the most unprofessional email to a prof they could.
