On the train early this morning travelling towards the Tesla Gigafactory and thinking about what a massive piece of 💩 Elno Muks is. While he’s openly supporting the far right in Germany here he’s profiting massively from immigrant workers at his factories 🫩 www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

The AfD won a shock election in Germany. Elon Musk was thrilled

The billionaire and the party have developed a symbiotic relationship to spread their far-right views both in Germany and the US

They're acting as if knowledge about climate and weather forecasting is not relevant for national security and defense. Even if you dislike science and scientist, this is stuff you really should fund if you want to win again on the battlefield 🧪

NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%. 80%! A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

god, i was born in the wrong era. imagine being around in the Cambrian period. you could just evolve something simple like shell or legs that nobody had thought of before and coast on that your whole life

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

Stéphane De Greef captured this video in 2014 near Angkor Thom in Siem Reap, Cambodia, part of a study on 'blue ants' in genus Leptogenys. The ants hunted this Thyropygus millipede as a group, paralyzed it with venom & are forming chains to haul it back to their nest. 🧪 (📷: Stéphane De Greef)

'the highly publicized achievement will be “extremely damaging to mathematics; it convinces decision makers that human mathematicians are obsolete, and it convinces young people that their passion for mathematics has no future.”' 🧪🤖

OpenAI solved a Millennium Prize question in 50 hours this week. We can expect it to probably make academic mathematics obsolete in the next few years. www.science.org/content/arti...

Between the PRs of (largely likely stolen) math breakthroughs, claims of "rogue AI" (actually cybercrimes by companies, but whatevs), and doomerist "whistleblowers", it feels like we've been subjected to a gish gallop of hype recently. >>

„… solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of AI may turn the tool against the primary goal.“ Urging everyone to read and share this

"the push by AI companies to solve mathematical problems as a benchmark is detrimental to the science of mathematics, and to the mathematical community. [...] We see these as part of broader alignment issues impacting other scientific and creative professions, as well as the whole of society."
