I think this is onto something. The fixation on lethality, testosterone, hypermasculinity—all that—makes those fixated want to look away from what the Iliad and Odyssey show us about combat trauma. Nolan's film makes me want to reread Jonathan Shay's Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America.

Saw The Odyssey last night and realized there’s another reason the right’s rage furbys are foaming at their mouths over the film. It is deeply antiwar, making an argument that builds incident by incident. Nolan’s sin: making explicit the vicious destructiveness of “heroic” ambition and violence.
