Just as @hellafitzgerald.bsky.social assured me weeks ago, there’s nothing Nolan’s film could do to harm The Odyssey, it’s been an adventure tale for 3,000 years. By the same token, @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social can’t put the hurt on Nolan’s The Odyssey… Even if she is entirely spot on here.

I wrote about the Trojan horse, and what we can learn from her mouth about different cultural attitudes towards deception and violence. As someone comments below, the phrase GIFT ARTICLE is pretty scary in this context.

Over the course of just under two hours, Andrew Scott believably portrays all eight characters from Uncle Vanya with a change of voice or the way he holds his face or just by having entire conversations with himself only it isn’t just himself because they’re all on stage together somehow.📽️

A ★★★★ review of National Theatre Live: Vanya (2024)

It takes a certain something, maybe it’s hubris, maybe it’s an inflated ego, maybe it’s being a gifted kid, to decide that the thing to do is a one-person show. Any one-person show is already asking a...

I’ve started listening to The Power Broker while cleaning the bathroom. Turns a rather mundane chore into an opportunity to see just what civil shenanigans that rascally Bob Moses does this week.

I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...

Sherman’s March (1985) documents Ross McElwee’s own unique experience finding his way through and out of the peculiar temporal architecture that makes up the Southern US. It’s the geography, the green of it all. The way every one-gas-station town looks exactly the same after dark.📽️

A ★★★★½ review of Sherman's March (1985)

For I have known them all already. Kilted contestants at the Highland Games, caber tossing telephone poles. Fearless swimmers in ponds and lakes opaquely green with algae. Matchmaking mothers of all k...

It’s becoming a Thing™️ for me. The horror on-screen is nothing compared to the sound of someone eating. Hardest scene to stomach in The Substance had nothing to do with Elisabeth or Sue (or Monstro Elisasue), but was Dennis Quaid housing fistfuls of shrimp.

"It sounds like leftovers being thrown in the toilet, the slop and slush echoing across porcelain. It sounds like Joey Chestnut mid-competition. It sounds like what I imagine Steve-O heard when he was spiraling through the air in a Porta Potty." www.weareravenous.com/odyssey-circ...

I described the ideal casting for Odysseus to Thomas as “somebody you’d take home from a bar even though you know there’s a more-than-halfway-decent chance they’d rob you blind before they left your house” and then we had a lot of fun riffing on past + present actors who have this quality

You need a guy who's spanning that dangerous bridge between incredibly hot and slightly repulsive, like a crush who intermittently gives you the ick — HELLO, BEN AFFLECK

I only ever saw Glen Hansard play live once, when The Frames opened for the New Pornographers in Central Park in the summer of 2006. It was an unbearably humid day, and, when the weather finally broke halfway through their set, we all truly believed Hansard had called down the thunderstorm himself

*standing up on the plane* Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned: —𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒊𝒃𝒐 𝒂𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒊

*standing up on the plane* ok you Protestant fucks prepare to get scared because I’m about to tell you what’s real. Hail Holy Queen our light our sweetness and our hopes. To Thee to we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to Thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Tu
