Didn't post about this beforehand because didn't want to jinx it, but this morning I went to a habeas hearing for someone who was detained at immigration court 10 days ago, and THE PETITION WAS GRANTED. What a relief. Ordered released within 24 hours.

More reasons to celebrate, more reasons to fight. This month, we celebrated Peter receiving a pardon, as well as the year since Ravi Ragbir received his. We were visited by Heury, recently freed from ICE detention, whose release we supported with digital accompaniment and an email campaign.
At this point, pretermissions take up 90% of the volunteering I do at immigration court. I see entire courtrooms filled with families DHS wants to send to Ecuador. To Uganda. To Honduras. They're scared. They don't know what's going on.

Today, our community coalesced around Peter as he went into an ICE check-in at Federal Plaza for the first time after he was given a pardon by the Governor of New York. Despite his clemency, the very real threat of detention during this check-in loomed.
If you’ve been a part of our Community Meetings, you know Peter, a father, restaurateur, former deportee and detainee, and a man who spent days working with first responders in the days after 9/11. Today, after a long collective effort, he was granted clemency from an old conviction.
