If you want 1.5C, 1.8C, 2C, overshoot, no-overshoot, etc, then they all require the same thing: rapid short-term emission reductions reaching net zero CO2 emissions as soon as possible. This has been clear from the IPCC Special Report on 1.5C, which depicts "overshoot" on its cover! 1/

I think the headline will be a surprise to nobody: we have provided the attribution and more detail as to how we do this.

As further data from our observation network has been made available over the weekend, the provisional new UK highest June temperature on record is 37.7°C at Lingwood, Norfolk. 🌡️

An incredible number of sites with 50+ year records have broken not just their monthly, but all-time "high-minimum" #temperature records in this recent heat These also include new England and NI records. New UK/Wales record not shown, 23.5 at Bute Park but POR *only* goes back to 1977 #ukheatwave

Don’t know when we last broke a monthly record three days in a row but this breaks the previous 1976 record by a wide margin

Today has been another record breaking day, with a new provisional June temperature record of 37.3°C recorded at Santon Downham this afternoon

I was on a call with DSIT senior officials and heads of arms length bodies yesterday, and one of the experts briefing us was in uniform because London Ambulance had put all reservists on standby. Warnings allow for preparation by responders, as well as reducing harm because people take precautions.

The London Ambulance Service responded to the highest number of life-threatening emergencies in its history yesterday. The Chief Executive said this was "driven by the extreme heat across London".

The UK June record was duly broken yesterday with 36.1C at Gosport, and it will fall again today. This spell also features high humidity and overnight temperatures. My husband commented with surprise on the dewy grass when he took his breakfast out. Very unusual to have dew points widely over 20C.

I am old enough to remember how extraordinary the 1976 heatwave felt. On the hottest weekend I wore that green velour top and long skirt to a party (the photo is from Feb 76). Fifty years on and a similar event would show much higher temperatures. We expect the record from that June to fall tomorrow

Compared to the widespread red heat warning in July 22, the humidity this time will be higher, increasing risk to health. Looks very likely we will break an all time monthly UK maximum for the second month in a row. Please stay safe and follow advice, and a special plea to take care in cold water.
