As further data from our observation network has been made available over the weekend, the provisional new UK highest June temperature on record is 37.7°C at Lingwood, Norfolk. 🌡️

The UK has provisionally set a new maximum temperature record for June for the second consecutive day, with 36.7°C reached at Merryfield, Somerset, on 25 June.

I was on a call with DSIT senior officials and heads of arms length bodies yesterday, and one of the experts briefing us was in uniform because London Ambulance had put all reservists on standby. Warnings allow for preparation by responders, as well as reducing harm because people take precautions.

The London Ambulance Service responded to the highest number of life-threatening emergencies in its history yesterday. The Chief Executive said this was "driven by the extreme heat across London".

The UK June record was duly broken yesterday with 36.1C at Gosport, and it will fall again today. This spell also features high humidity and overnight temperatures. My husband commented with surprise on the dewy grass when he took his breakfast out. Very unusual to have dew points widely over 20C.

I am old enough to remember how extraordinary the 1976 heatwave felt. On the hottest weekend I wore that green velour top and long skirt to a party (the photo is from Feb 76). Fifty years on and a similar event would show much higher temperatures. We expect the record from that June to fall tomorrow

Compared to the widespread red heat warning in July 22, the humidity this time will be higher, increasing risk to health. Looks very likely we will break an all time monthly UK maximum for the second month in a row. Please stay safe and follow advice, and a special plea to take care in cold water.

Feeling chilly after the end of the heatwave? Always worth a look at “Is the UK hot right now?” This is pretty typical nationwide for early June from the most recent 30 year average ending 2020. Every decade we update the average and it gets warmer each time.

I don’t know if it’s a comfort that the red map hostility extends to France or not TBH.
