It’s been a very busy month & a lot of time given over to discussions & planning for next year against a challenging financial outlook for all hospices! Huge thanks to @tobyhporter.bsky.social, @hospiceuk.bsky.social and @wesstreeting.bsky.social for making next year feel a lot more optimistic!
Hospice funding is complex but yesterday's announcement of £100m is a very welcome boost & we thank @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social for his personal commitment to the hospice sector. Many thanks to @tobyhporter.bsky.social @charliejking.bsky.social & all the team at @hospiceuk.bsky.social
Today Stephen Kinnock and I announce the biggest funding for hospices in a generation: £100 million for improving buildings, kit and technology £26 million grant for children and young people’s hospices An early Christmas present for hospices that do a wonderful job for families.
The best possible news in the run up to Xmas. It has taken more than a year's campaigning, but we are really THRILLED that Wes Streeting, Stephen Kinnock and our partners at NHSE have announced this very substantial package of financial support to the charitable hospice sector
We welcome today's announcement of additional support for hospices by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Hospices are ready to do all we can in the coming years to ensure everyone gets the care and support they need at the end of life. Read more: www.hospiceuk.org/latest-from-...
What a powerful programme highlighting the devastating financial position the hospice sector is experiencing. Thank you @danielhewittitv.bsky.social @tobyhporter.bsky.social @doctoroxford.bsky.social @katherinesleeman.bsky.social & all the other voices included in the report.
This is a must-watch tonight at 8:30pm. Thank you @danielhewittitv.bsky.social for reporting on the financial crisis the #Hospice sector is experiencing. The government must provide urgent & sustainable action in order for us to continue to provide #palliativecare www.itv.com/watch/news/k...
The quality of MPs letters on both sides of the assisted dying debate just shows how much more value backbenchers could add if they were given a proper role in our parliamentary system.
Don't miss @danielhewittitv.bsky.social's timely investigation into the dire underfunding of palliative care - tomorrow night, ITV, 8.30pm. 70% of UK hospices are in deficit. The work they do is so precious - yet they’re cutting jobs, beds and home care. Do we care? www.itv.com/news/2024-11...

Some thoughts on tomorrow’s vote on Assisted Dying, on the importance of being compassionate, and on avoiding the kind of “winner takes all” approach that was so ruinous and unrepresentative after the Brexit referendum www.politicshome.com/thehouse/art...
MPs must focus on palliative care provision, however they vote on assisted dying
Tomorrow, the country will find out whether the assisted dying for terminally ill adults bill passes its Second Reading.

Putting the final touches to our programme on the funding crisis in end of life care, which airs Thursday on ITV1. I am so grateful to those who opened up to us about their experiences and the hospices who let us in. Keeping Care Alive: Hospices in Crisis? 8:30pm Thursday, ITV1
Alas neither Labour UK nor Wes Streeting on here yet, but could we all agree that however MPs vote on AD next week, this is a huge opportunity for the government to announce - finally, after decades of successive governments failing dying people - proper NHS funding of palliative care?
I made a UK hospice folks starter pack which people going to #HospiceUKconf may find useful. Cc @tobyhporter.bsky.social go.bsky.app/MfxpC23
Such a compelling podcast, both the interview with @kimleadbeatermp.bsky.social & wrap up by @lewisgoodall.com - the Assisted Dying debate & prospect of a law change brings complexity & challenge to UK hospice sector, but think actually ALL sides "got lucky when she (Kim) chose to represent it"
Whatever your views on the assisted dying debate, I urge everyone to listen to @lewisgoodall.com's profound, and often moving, interview with @kimleadbeatermp.bsky.social. It shows that politics can, and should, be a force for good in all our lives. open.spotify.com/episode/22M2...
Have to say this was a superb and affecting listen. Regardless of the outcome of the vote the UK would benefit with more people like Kim in politics

Wherever you stand on assisted dying, I’d urge you to read this superb, thoughtful, evidence-based piece from @iandunt.bsky.social. A couple of points to add, from my perspective as an atheist palliative care doctor who opposes legal change at this time 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/iandunt/...
Trying to make a damn bit of sense of the assisted dying debate

Delighted to have contributed to this investigation into hospice and end of life care, and the huge challenges faced by the sector. It couldn’t be more timely. Keeping Care Alive: Hospices in Crisis? will air on ITV, 8:30pm, Thursday 28th November
Really pleased to say I am presenting an ITV programme on hospice and end of life care. Since my mum received hospice care a decade ago I’ve been investigating the state of the sector and its lack of funding. Keeping Care Alive: Hospices in Crisis? will air on ITV, 8:30pm, Thursday 28th November
Everyone @hospiceuk.bsky.social is excited about your programme, @danielhewittitv.bsky.social . One of the few certainties about the next 20 years is that the numbers of people dying every year in the UK will rise from c 660k annually to 790k, due to demography. We all need a strong hospice sector

My first post on here and I couldn't be happier it's about this. Dan and his team have been brilliant to work with. This programme could not be better timed, or more important.
